And if your pudding is climbing the charts or breaking dance floors across the country and DJs are rocking it, then it’s safe to say you’re mission accomplished. How you achieve results is up to you. And with ever-increasing families of software, VST plug-ins, sequencers, DSP cards etc., your chances of running a high-output studio without spending 80,000 on it are much better than 15 years ago.

Hardware still has a very strong and important place in music production and recording. With some mixing desks reaching up to 250,000, it’s safe to assume they’ll help tracks sound like they were made in a top London studio. It’s not a matter of the “hardware vs. software” argument that many like to get into, but rather exploring both worlds and returning what best suits your needs. If you’re a student and DJ looking to crank out some dirty electronics, then coughing up tens of thousands of pounds of hardware to cram into your living room probably isn’t the best way to go. A much more reasonable solution would be the software route.

With a fully modern software studio, the production quality can match that of a hardware studio that holds up to 100,000 sports kits. This may sound silly but think about it. You have a track with 27 sounds. Each calls for your proper compensation to get the best compressor unit you have. At a great price. If only 15 of these channels need such treatment then … well you do the math. On top of that top quality EQ, limiter, reverb, delay, phase, flanging, stereo processing, synths… the list goes on. Buy a high-end software processor and it’s instantly available on every channel. Get yourself a fat softsynth and use the same tune as many times as you like. It’s not a cheap hobby by the way of hardware, so for those who don’t have piles of notes under their beds, read on. This guide is for anyone who wants to produce advanced, high-quality tracks on their computer. A cheap recording studio does not mean cheap sound quality! Cheap music software doesn’t mean limited production techniques.

Algorithms for software audio processing are constantly being improved. With some companies producing DSP cards as well as VST and DirectX plug-ins that are very close to their more expensive hardware counterparts, this is a serious consideration for most.

So don’t judge when you sit down and look at that little PC sitting awkwardly on your desk. It’s a mammoth room full of knobs, sliders, samplers, synths, compressors, limiters, effects units, switch pads and a whole lot more. In fact, if you were to open it up and take a look at the physical form of these ones and zeros, you’d be hard-pressed to find a room to accommodate all of these amazing audio creation and manipulation tools.
