Wire-line Stem – Sinker Bar

The wire rod Stem or Sinker is used as a weight to push the wire-line (wire-tool) down the well and provide the weight needed during drilling operations against the pressure of the well and the drag of the stuffing box.

The formula/rule for determining the weight of a rigid steel column is:

OD² x 8/3 = weight (pounds per foot)

The impact force increased with increasing column weight delivered by the jars. Do not overload the tool-strings, as excess mass will burn the feeler and premature breakage of the pins may occur.

Other heavy, high-radiation alloys available include: tungsten, uranium, mallory-filled (mercury alloy).

Do not use a Full Head Stem for pouring as it will flow down and split the outer barrel.
