Formation Integrity Test (FIT)

Formation Integration Test (FIT) The method of testing the strength of the formation is a tire pressure by increasing the Bottom Hole Pressure (BHP) to the design pressure. FIT is usually directed to ensure that a formation below the casing exposure is not breached when the next section is at higher bottom hole pressure. Generally, the drilling engineers in the city will determine how much pressure the formation integrity test will require and design a FIT unit, usually in pounds rather than a gallon unit.

How to Calculate the Pressure Required for a Formation Health Test.

Before you perform the formation integrity test, you must know the pressure required for the Formation Integrity Test. The formula shown below shows you how to calculate the required FIT pressure.

Pressure required for FIT (psi) = (FIT required in ppg – Current hair weight in ppg) x 0.052 x Correct shoe depth in shoes

The following example shows how to use the formula to calculate the pressure required for the test:

Required FIT (ppg) = 14.5

Current mud density (ppg) = 9.2

True depth of vertical casing (ft) = 4000 TVD

Required pressure for FIT = (14.5-9.2) x 0.052 x 4000 = 1102 psi

Note: Acronyms are listed below;

psi = pounds per square inch

ppg = pounds per gallon

ft = foot

The procedures for the Installation Integration Test (FIT) are as follows;

1. Drill out a few feet of new formation, bottom up and collect formation samples to confirm that the new formation is being drilled on and then drill a drill line into the casing pad.

2. Connect the header or tubing, line up a cement pump, and run in an open drill line to ensure the drill line is completely filled with drilling fluid.

3. Stop the pump and close a choke valve.

4. Slowly pump a small amount of drilling fluid with continuous pump strokes and recommended pump strokes are 5 to 10 strokes per minute. Record total pump strokes, drain pipe pressure and casing pressure. Pump until the casing pressure reaches the pressure required to test the integrity of the formation. Stop the pump and hold the pressure for a few minutes to ensure pressure stability.

5. Release the pressure and open the well. Then start the drilling operation.
