What is W3C Validation and Why Does My Website Need It?

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web and is chaired by Sir Tim Berners-Lee (the man credited with “inventing” the Internet).

The W3C’s sole purpose is to ensure that the World Wide Web and Web sites all work as well as they can. Their guidelines are very strict and are based solely on the concept of “access for all”. While it’s not official (Google keeps the criteria it uses to rank websites secret) it’s generally agreed among web developers that following these guidelines will help your website rank higher in search engines. The W3C itself says “Following these guidelines will also help people find information on the Web faster.”

So if you want to compete effectively on the Internet, then your business needs a website that’s W3C compliant – one that’s web-friendly.

You should test websites against these guidelines using the W3C’s free online validation service – To do this, simply enter the web address of the website you want to check.

If a site is “approved” then the site complies with the W3C guidelines. If it “fails” the validator will report errors as well as any warnings. These errors and warnings can be used to identify problems in website coding so that a website developer can fix them. Usually these are detailed technical explanations that are incomprehensible to a layperson.

A W3C bug report is very useful for developers because it also includes a description of how to fix the problem in a way that should make the site pass validation.

Errors

The most common error reported by the W3C Validator is known as a “Syntax Error”. HTML and XHTML are the languages used in web coding and the W3C produces an approved list of commands (words used in the language). If a web developer has used an invalid command (word) then a Syntax Error is generated. The site may still appear to function and display properly but it does not meet the accessibility levels required by the W3C.

Caution

Unlike errors, warnings are generated when the W3C validator cannot understand the coding that the developer has used in the website. Sometimes the commands used may be so different from the list of accepted HTML and XHTML commands that the W3C cannot advise the developer how to correct the problem. More seriously, it could mean that the site has the potential to crash or not work properly.

This guide is a relatively simple overview of an extremely complex and highly technical area that is usually reserved for experienced web developers. That’s why it’s important to bring to your attention some other details about the W3C guidelines that may be relevant from time to time.

Levels of Validation

There are actually different levels of certification and all our sites meet at least level 1 of the Guidelines. You can also work at higher levels if you want, which may give visitors the ability to increase the font size on the site to make it more readable. You can also make sure that your website is “screen reader” compatible (screen readers give a ‘voice’ to the website and read the website content to visitors).

Content Management Systems and Verification

Most websites now support the use of a Content Editor (also known as a Content Management System) that allows people with little to no web development skills to quickly create and manage content on their website.

This means that what used to be the preserve of those with considerable technical expertise is now open to anyone with basic computer skills.

Content editors, however, have a very difficult job on their hands as they have to edit all the raw text, images, links, tables, bulleted lists, etc. which you take and convert using various formulas and processes. this raw data into HTML and/or XHTML code approved by the W3C.

While this is easy for a web developer to do, since they already have knowledge of “valid” code and whatnot, it is very difficult for an automated system to do and often leads to errors. For example, 95% of validation errors on our sites originate from a content editor. Much of this can be avoided by cutting and pasting a copy directly from Word for Windows into the Content Editor.

This is because Word for Windows contains a lot of hidden information that can interfere with HTML and/or XHTML code on a website.

We always recommend that you first cut and paste from Word into a simple word processor such as Notepad. You can then paste from Notepad back into the Content Editor and avoid many validation errors. This is completely normal and a problem commonly experienced by many web designers around the world.

That’s why it’s important that whenever you or your client add or change content on a website, you also check that it’s still valid. If it is not, then your website designer should be able to fix it for you.
