Suppression of Natural Limestones Deactivation During Cyclic Carbonation

I. INTRODUCTION

This research focuses on the use of limestone for high temperature separation of CO2 from flue gas in carbonate tube technology. Post-combustion CO2 capture from coal-fired power plants and district thermal plants has been considered as a preferred application of carbonate capture. A simplified plan of the process, based on literature sources [1]shown in figure 1.

Although carbonate drilling is not yet a technology that has been expanded into industrial practice, there are some pilot units around the world. Alonso et al. the main results from the operation of the pilot plant using CaO tube, which is combined inside a facility that burns biomass in a fluidized bed reactor. [2].

The use of CaO-based sorbents for the high temperature separation of CO2 from industrial processes has been the subject of numerous studies. The good economic availability of these materials makes them attractive candidates for solving the problems of suppressing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.

A major obstacle to the application of CaO-based sorbents in industrial practice is the gradual decrease in sorption capacity, which is evident in repeated cycles of calcination (i.e. thermal decarbonation) and carbonation. Based on the experimental data, Abanades proposed an empirical formula (1) that describes the dependence of the conversion of CaO to CaCO3 on the number of cycles. [3].

The meaning of the symbols in (1) is as follows: xN is the transition in the Nth cycle, fm and fw are constants.

This formula gave good agreement with experimental data under many conditions but its validity was limited to 20 cycles. In their study, Wang and Anthony therefore proposed a different equation, which was valid for a large number of cycles. These authors consider the combination of thermal sintering with other irreversible processes, such as crystal growth and reactions of CaO with impurities in the gas, as the main reasons for the reduction of the activity of CaO sorbents. They also assumed that the degradation rate was not significantly dependent on the experimental conditions [4].
