Review of Scivation’s Xtend – Bodybuilding Supplements

Until recently I never paid much attention to branched chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements. When you have all these fancy muscle builders like various creatine supplements, nitric oxide boosters, and testosterone boosters out there, branched chain aminos don’t seem so appealing. However, I have done a lot of research on supplements in general over the past few years and now have a completely different opinion on BCAAs as I now see their significant importance.

I guess the ad really works. The ads in the add-on ads, even if it’s too much, can really grab your attention and half the time you won’t even realize it. But hey, that’s part of the ad. I hate to admit that I have been unhappy with this at times. But I have, and chances are, we all have at some point. BCAAs have never really had the same tag lines that other muscle builders sell. These days, most supplement formulas contain BCAA, but in very low doses.

While most every major supplement carries some sort of BCAA product, I looked into Scivation’s Xtend about a year ago, and I’m glad I did. Before I go any further on this, let me first say that this is not one of those supplements that you ‘feel’ or will gain massive amounts of muscle in a short amount of time. Some of the immediate effects I notice are less pain and faster recovery. I also notice that by taking this during my workout, my muscles have more sustained energy. Since I drink a pre and post workout drink, I use Xtend during my workouts and on my weight training days, I use it during cardio. The reason for this, which is why BCAAs are so important, is that you break down muscle when you work out. But if you feed your muscles BCAAs during the process, you reverse this effect.

Xtend, unlike most other BCAA products, has a generous dose of BCAA at 3.5 grams of leucine, and 1.8 grams each of isoleucine and valine (this ratio of 2:1:1 is known to be most effective) . Xtend also contains a moderate dose of glutamine and citrulline malate. I don’t know a ton about citrulline malate other than it is known to enhance performance. At one gram though, I can’t imagine you’ll feel the effects of this unless you take multiple servings of Xtend. The amount of glutamine Xtend contains in each serving is 2.5 grams. There are many studies that show that just two grams of glutamine can increase natural growth hormone levels. Glutamine is also important for recovery. So this is a very valuable addition.

Recommendations for this product are to take it before, during, and after exercise and anywhere from two to six scoops (two scoops is one serving). Again, I only take this product during my workouts and/or cardio sessions (two, sometimes three sticks). I think it is very important to take this during cardio to prevent muscle breakdown. If you don’t take anything for pre- or post-workout, this product is good for those times too, especially post-workout (your post-workout mix should always have a high level of BCAAs). I also experimented with taking Xtend before bedtime. I experienced deeper and more restful sleep while taking this at night. This is probably due to the glutamine in the product.

Here’s my take on Scivation’s Xtend: It’s the best BCAA supplement on the market in terms of quality and price per serving. In most stores you’ll find 30 serving containers of Xtend for $25-$30 a pop, but I’ve been able to find this product at a few online stores for about $15. Of course you should consider shipping, but you still save a significant amount of money. I’ve told people that if I were to break down and only take one supplement (besides whey protein), this would definitely be it.
