Make Your Own Wipe Solution

Cleaning solutions are so easy to make and can save you money too! Use them to clean sticky hands and messy faces as well as dirty bottoms. Unlike commercial wipes, these recipes contain no alcohol or chemicals, and they smell great. Use these recipes on cloth towels or make your own disposable towels and save even more money! To make disposable towels, cut quality paper towels in half, or leave the towels whole.

Common Fabric Cleaning Solution Ingredients:

Most cleaning solution recipes have the same key ingredients, which are used for the same reason in each recipe. These are common ingredients and why they are included:

  • Oil: Helps the cleanser to glide over the baby’s skin and keep the skin soft
  • Soap: Cleans by removing all traces of urine and faeces
  • EO: (Essential Oil) Added for antibacterial and/or aromatherapy purposes.
  • Water: The main ingredient in any recipe, cleans the diaper area and dissolves other ingredients

The types and amounts of oils, soaps, EOs, and water that go into a recipe are what give each fabric cleaning solution its distinct “personality.” Have fun trying different recipes until you find the ones you like best!

How to use Fabric Cleaning Solutions

When mixing solutions, it works best to start with oil and end with water. The oil will coat your measuring tools so the soap will drip right. Be sure to add the water slowly or you will end up with a ton of bubbles! In most cases, it is easier to gently mix the cleaning solution in a bottle with a lid, then pour it into the storage container.

There are many different ways to store and apply cleaning solutions to your rugs, try a few of the ideas below to find what works best for your family. You may discover that one system works great at home and another works well away from home. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Use a spray bottle to spray baby’s bottom or wipes. (For baby’s comfort we prefer to wash towels)
  • Use a bottle with a stopper (such as bottled water bottles) to pour the solution onto the towels.
  • Pour the warm solution into an insulated container to provide warm towels for the baby.
  • Pour the solution into a commercial baby wipe container and dip the wipes into the solution.
  • Place the cloth wipes in a commercial baby wipe container and pour the wipe solution over the wipes.
  • A commercial baby wipe container can be placed in a wipe warmer to provide nice warm wipes for baby.

Do not store solutions or wet wipes for too long as they can turn gray and wet wipes may even grow white – ewww! Check your solution and wet wipes daily, and mix small portions of the solution often, rather than large chunks, to avoid contamination. We mix a fresh solution once a week, store it in a bottle of bottled water, and have had no problem with fading.
