How to Measure Tables For Tablecloths
I have been in the tableware industry for over 10 years selling to all types of establishments, such as, party rental stores, hotels, restaurants, catering, banquet halls, churches and anyone else who uses catering facilities.
Most people know how to measure for a table, but for those who don’t, here’s how to measure round, square, and rectangular tables.
Rectangle tables usually come in 3 lengths of 48, 72 and 96 inches and are referred to as banquet tables and 6-ft or 8-ft tables are the most commonly used. While the average table is 30 inches wide, some vary in widths of 18, 24 and 36 inches. Square tables will follow the same formula.
Now you need to determine the need of your facilities for disposal, which does not have a standard. How the table should look on the table is personal and by choice. Some want the cloth to cover only the head with a small drop, while others want it to go to the floor. A general guideline is 10″ to the leg, 15″ to the bottom of the chair or the middle of the table and 30″ to the floor, if the table is actually 30″ high. Although nursing facilities only require a 4″ drop to accommodate wheelchairs. Note that any fabric that goes to the floor should have rounded corners to prevent it from sticking out and creating a path for someone to walk.
Once you determine what drop is best for your facility, then you need to add that measurement to the table dimensions. For example, the size of your table is 30x72x30, which means the width, the length (the table top on both) and the height. You want a drop of 10 centimeters, you would add 10+10+30= 50 and 10+10+72= 92 of so the table you need is 50×92, now some companies only offer standard sizes, so if you can’t get the exact size you need go up to 54×96.
This formula works for rounds for all tables, you will add a 10″ drop to the fabric. For example a 60″ round or 60R 10+10+60= 80 rounds or 80R add fabric.
To measure the table, Determine if you want to cover 3 or 4 sides and then add the table dimensions, 4 sides of a 6 ft banquette. 30 + 30 + 72 + 72 = 204 inches then convert to feet or 17-ft. For 3 sides 30 + 30 + 72 = 132 inches or 11-ft. Most retailers require skirts to be purchased in 2 increments, this is because the item is cut lengthwise and not widthwise and most fabrics are wider than 60 inches.
To measure the glass for the round sheets, use a tape measure and then divide by 12 5 x 3.14 = 15.7 or 16 square feet.
Always pay attention to whether your boards have square or rounded corners because 1/4” can make a difference in how the boards are placed on the table.
Have your dealer ask if you have the correct size but most manufacturers will not recommend a drop as this is your decision and ultimately your responsibility if the garment does not fit. So knowing what your space needs or how the clothes should look and how to measure will insure you get the right boards.
