Building a Chicken Coop – Construction Terms

Are you planning to build a chicken coop but confused about some terminology? I want to share these basic terms that you want to know and what they mean to you when you are building a chicken coop.

Truss

A roof is a frame on any building above the roof. When building a chicken coop, the straw will also be on top of your roof. The rafters can be prefabricated or built in place, the rafters add stability and shape to your roof.

Studs

A batten is a piece of wood used for walls or another piece of framing wood material to build your coop in a vertical position.

Posts Corner

The corner posts for building a chicken coop are 4″ x 4″ posts placed on a concrete footing and attached to the foundation with a strap.

Concrete Footing

Your legs are very important for strength and to allow the enclosures to keep predators out. You can drill corner post legs 8″ wide and 12″ deep for your base post lines. An alternative option is to dig a continuous foot 4″ wide and 6″ deep around the perimeter of the coop.

Concrete Mixture

Your concrete footings are a mixture of sand, rock and Portland cement. The formula of the mixture is 3 cups of sand, 2 cups of crushed stone and 1 cup of gravel of type 2 Portland cement. Then, add water and mix to a thick consistency, so that it is not too dry and not too wet. Post foundation saddles should be placed as soon as the concrete mix can support the weight of the foundation post chains.

Base Post Saddle Straps

As mentioned about corner post installation, when building a chicken coop you will need to secure your post to the bottom of the posts with a Simpson base post. These come in different sizes depending on the size of your post. The size you will most likely use will be a 4″ chain and a 6″ thread for the post.

Simpson Strap and Plate Fasteners

Knots come in very handy when you are building a chicken coop. They come in various sizes and are used for many installation phases of your project. Some of the fittings you will need are: 90 deg. Neck braces, angle shoelace braces, and flat deck braces that connect two necks or braces at the tail end.

Standard Fastener

A standard fastener is usually galvanized screws or galvanized nails. Both screws and nails are made in different sizes and lengths. Use the appropriate size and length of screw to match the wood you are using.

Equipment

The tools you will use are: Framing hammer, finish hammer, handsaw, jigsaw, circular saw, ½” or 3/8″ socket driver, standard chisel and Philip head chisel, table saw, miter saw, pencil, ruler tape, square, level 2 ft.

These terms should help you communicate with your wood company and supplier when you are building a chicken coop and ordering materials. Now that you know what all these terms mean you will have an easier time creating your own chicken coop, big or small.
