How to Calculate Your Ideal Shoulder Size – It All Starts With Your Height

If you picture your proportions and body shape in your mind, you probably have a picture of wide shoulders and a narrow waist (or at least you SHOULD have this picture in your head). But what you may not focus on is the correct size of your arm according to your height.

To calculate your ideal shoulder size you must first know your ideal waist size. BUT to know your ideal waist size you should start with your height. The calculation goes from your height to your waist to your shoulders.

Your ideal waist size will be between 45%-47% of your height. In other words, if you are 70 inches tall, your ideal waist is between 31.5 – 33 inches.

This calculation is based on bone structure and a low level of fat mass. Once you’ve determined your ideal waistline, the next consideration is your shoulders.

Based on all the studies of proportions and physical attraction we know that the ideal ratio of waist to shoulders is a ratio of 1:1.618. Going back to our example of 70 inches tall and 31.5 – 33 inches in diameter your imaginary arm circumference will be 1.618 times your imaginary diameter or 51 – 53 inches.

The ideal shoulder and waist ratio only takes place when your waist is within your ideal range. In other words, having a waist that is 50% of your height and a shoulder that is 1.618 times greater than this will produce the proportions you are looking for. And you will actually find it very difficult to build your shoulders to this extent to match your waist size. This will also create a shorter stalky appearance which is not ideal. Your best body shape should start with calculating your height, otherwise there is no way to determine if your waist and shoulder size is too thin and too thin.

Follow this measurement pattern to start with your height –> ideal waist –> ideal shoulders and you’re on your way to building your best body.
