Making Baby Food at Home
Making your baby’s food at home will save time and money, and give your baby the healthiest choice for food. It doesn’t have to be a scary secret. Making baby food is easy and very cheap.
Your initial investment for homemade baby food should be very small. You will need:
8 ice trays
Quality freezer storage containers or freezer bags.
A blender (if you don’t have one, it’s not necessary)
If you start with fruits:
The easiest one to make at home is applesauce. You can buy a large economy jar of Unsweetened organic applesauce and simply open the jar, pour into ice cubes, cover with foil and freeze. If you make homemade applesauce in advance, you can also freeze it in ice cube trays. For babies, make sure you don’t add citrus to an apple unless the baby has already eaten it.
Bananas are so easy. When they start to ripen, if you don’t have a blender, puree them and put them in ice cream. When your bananas are soft, just blend them in a blender and add them to the trays. If you are concerned about the color (it will look a little brown) you can add a drop or two of lemon juice again, just in case the baby has had citrus before. You don’t want to introduce two foods at once.
If you want to start with vegetables, cabbage is the easiest. Go to the store where you buy canned pumpkin (the stuff you buy to make pumpkin pie). Check the label. Some are 100% pureed pumpkins. This is what you need. They don’t contain any added spices. Buy the biggest can. Open it and put it in ice cubes. Wrap in foil and freeze. Other very easy ones are: Sweet potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, peas.
In a day or two when it’s frozen solid, you take the flowers out and put them in freezer bags.
I kept a Tupperware container in my freezer that held all the vegetable cubes and one that held all the fruit cubes, then each day I would go and get what I needed. I usually just reheat them in the microwave. Mix them well and test the temperature with your finger. If the formula is too thick (it may be at first) you can mix it with small amounts of water or breast milk or formula.
As the baby grows you will use 3-4 cubes per feeding, but in the beginning you can use only one cube per feeding.
These are very portable. I only had a few small containers. I put the frozen cube in there and it will thaw if we go out, or I can add a little hot water and thaw it faster if needed, then mix in the baby cereal to get the perfect balance.
Applesauce, bananas, avocados and pumpkins are the easiest to make and if you do nothing else, it will still cost you money.
If you want to go a step further, all fruits and vegetables can be prepared for babies by simply cooking them until they are soft (keep all the water you mix in so that it is soft and runny). After the vegetables are cooked there will be a lot of vitamins. When they are soft, put them in a blender. Add the water you used to cook them until they are soft and consistent with baby food. When it’s nice and smooth, pour it into the ice cream. freezing Take it out after a few days and wash your towels to use again.
I used to do one big batch once a week. Then next week I will do a different batch.
If you decide that you want to try to make your own cereal at home, it is also easy.
When she’s ready to add protein, to make about two cups of baby corn:
1/3 cup dry grains (brown rice, millet, corn, oats, etc.)
2 Tb dried fruit (candy, sliced almonds, etc.)
Put them in a blender (DRY) and make powder. It will make about 1/2 cup of powder. When you are ready to eat the corn, you put it in two cups of boiling water. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes (double if you add soya beans). Stir frequently while cooking. You can refrigerate or freeze this for just two to three days. Make sure you freeze it in small portions. This recipe came from the Super Baby Food Book. She has all kinds of great recipes to recreate healthy baby food.
As it ages and is ready to taste meaty, your regular blender may struggle with it. We have a really nice blender, but if yours isn’t powerful enough, you can substitute with a food processor. Just cook some chicken breasts with just water (no seasoning). Then grab a fresh pear from the store and put it in a blender with a slice or two of chicken, adding enough water to make it smooth (make sure the child is old enough to eat a raw, rotten pear). Freeze it and use it instead of baby food. They smell good anyway, and the homemade chicken smelled great.
You can also add formula or breast milk or baby water to each feed to achieve the right consistency.
Finally, you can also freeze milk in ice cubes. This is really helpful if you buy milk in larger quantities than your baby can drink before it goes bad. This works well with goat’s milk, however, the more you freeze it while it’s fresh, the better the flavor will be when you thaw it and use it. So if you have milk in the fridge and you know you’ll keep it for a few days, you can freeze it to make it last longer, and use cubes when you need fresh milk but don’t have it. These will work well in making your own homemade mashed potatoes or for baking.
