Want To Get Promoted? Develop The Habit Of Going The Extra Mile (GTEM)

Richard A. Chambers (Rik, his nickname, for short) was my Training Manager/Coordinator at Guinness Nig. Plc Ikeja Brewery, Lagos in 1994/95. During approx. the year I reported to him, he often told me to “build up” to be a very competent brewer and manager.

By the time I got to Benin Brewery, I had four thick spiral bound training reports (written by myself) with lots of great photos (taken by Rik) of almost every area of the process/plant I was trained on. , were full. These documents – as Rik assured me they would – proved to be very useful references in my later years at the company. In fact, many newbies (and some old managers) need to borrow and copy them in different places they have been found!

But this is not all. It was Rik’s prowess in Lotus Spreadsheets Macro Programming that really brought us closer. Within a period of 6 months he – in accordance with the official role assigned to him – single handedly implemented an automated Variable Cost Analysis Profitability application adopted by Lagos and Benin Breweries for the purposes of official MONTHLY performance reporting was approved.

Fortunately for me, he noticed that I showed him how to code the code for various data entry / report interfaces, and decided to engage me by giving me a laptop, and check the errors in the formulas.

As time went on, he started giving me copies of ALL the code in the various applications – for the brewing and packaging parts. I was still a trainee, but 6 months after restarting at Benin brewery, I was officially responsible for maintaining/updating the Rik software for Benin Brewery. This was ALL senior management level work – the very complex formulas for calculating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) would scare most people, but Rik had prepared me well.

It’s no surprise then that by 1997, I had successfully developed four custom reporting applications to replace manual data capture systems in the Brewing department. Over time, other departments will make use of my skills – including Engineering Services and Packaging Departments.

But you know the best part? I did all this informally – in my spare time – while still working full time as a brewer/manager. Nobody gave me time – and I never wanted it. The challenge was there – and I was with it, and the passion/excitement to make a noticeable difference was enough. Having watched Rik do so much OUTSIDE his brief, I have no problem doing the same. He had set a good example.

The time I spent with Rik prepared me for the successes I would later achieve at Guinness. An example is the nomination of the company-wide Project Insight team, which has developed comprehensive formats for computerizing data collection for technical reports, analysis, etc. High profile retreats will be developed to relax senior managers in various divisions/departments, and then other centers – including overseas trips to attend international courses.

But I didn’t rest on my laurels – in fact, by the time I left the company (to start my own business), I had successfully acquired MS Excel-VB programming skills through self-teaching, and benefited from the company’s transition from Lotus. took Smart Suite for MS Office. So, I didn’t just JUMP into developing custom dashboard solutions. I have been doing it for YEARS before going into it as a business.

It’s important not to get carried away, or think of yourself as superior to those who are good at what you do. I will NEVER be old enough to call ANYONE – even a 5 year old – a little boy or girl. The last thing I want to be is a BIG Man – you know the type who wear all kinds of weather because they have money/power or position. It’s ironic that billionaires like Warren Buffet who have MORE reasons to act BIG, still use old model cars and remain humble!

This article is written to encourage anyone currently in paid employment who may feel they are allowing themselves to play roles that they feel are outside of their job description. Often opportunities for growth, development and success WILL be disguised as work – to paraphrase Thomas Edison.

And that’s why most people MISS them! If you want to achieve lasting success, make sure you fully master your primary responsibilities so that you can successfully take on more challenges, giving decision makers the ability to find positions of higher responsibility.

Some people are overwhelmed by the “status” they think their jobs assign to them. They are busy acting as BIG men and women. This mentality makes them feel that there are certain roles that they are too big to play. And this causes them to miss out on career advancement – especially in a company that is looking for dedicated leaders to make things happen.

No serious decision-maker will approach a promotion or career development opportunity without making sure you have the ability – and ongoing passion – to deliver the desired results. Develop the habit of Going the Extra Mile (GTEM) at work starting today and see yourself moving to NEW levels of success!
