Goal Setting SMART Process

When it comes to goal setting, it can be very demoralizing when you are constantly missing your goals. In this article we look at goal setting the SMART way. A proven method of goal setting that increases the likelihood that you will achieve your goals. If you don’t know much about SMART goal setting then you will find it much more difficult to get the results you want. Not least because the SMART goal setting method gives you an easy-to-follow formula to follow.

Most people are in the habit of focusing on what they want out of life and this in turn causes them to focus on what they don’t have. This is because they are constantly comparing themselves to an external ideal. They compare themselves to the six-pack person or the billionaire or the perfect actress.

When it comes to finding out what you want, having a formula that breaks down your goals into achievable steps is invaluable. You can still get that six pack but you might not do it for the next 6 months. That doesn’t mean you can’t take big steps towards it in the next 6 months. And that’s exactly what the SMART Goal Setting process is all about.

SMART goals mean:

Special

Measurable

To arrive

Realistic

Timely

As you can see, running your goals through the above five factors (almost like a checklist) will put you on the path to achieving your goals in no time.

Is your goal specific enough or a general washing goal? I want to lose 20 pounds vs. I want to lose weight

Is your goal measurable – do you have something you can track regularly that tells you how close you are to your goals (in this case how many kilos are you losing per week)

Is your goal achievable? Can you lose 20 pounds if you do the right exercises and eat right if you are willing to try. This part of the SMART goal process is best viewed with another…

Your goal is realistic. Do you want to lose 20 pounds in 3 weeks? It’s not realistic and therefore not possible Read your goal, if you know you can only lose 2 pounds a week and still be healthy, then it will take you at least 10 weeks.

Finally Time. Have you set a time frame for when you will reach the goal. Of course this is related to the two points above – is it realistic to achieve the goal in the time frame you have set, is it possible to achieve the goal in the time frame you have set?

There are some other things you should do when it comes to SMART goal setting and below we offer some tips that you may find useful.
