## Job Search Training – The Hidden Job Market Will Keep You Employed Even in Tough Economic Times

The secret job market that has the best jobs available only in one place. The only place where the hidden job market resides is in the mind of the decision maker who has the power and authority to hire you.

One of the best ways to think about this is to take a map of your city or town. From the center draw a circle 25 miles in diameter (50 miles around the circumference). Then draw another circle with a radius of 50 miles (100 miles). Try to guess how many businesses are in each circle. Maybe take the Yellow Pages and count the number of businesses on the four pages. Look at the page numbers to see how many there are. Divide the total number of pages by 4 and multiply by the number of businesses you counted. This will not be exact, but a close approximation. There are probably thousands, tens of thousands in a big city.

Now, what percentage of those businesses do you think have problems? Twenty five percent? Fifty percent? Less…..More?

I tell you that 100% of those businesses have problems! In good economic times, businesses overcome the problems associated with orders, making their goods and services available to more and more customers. In bad times, businesses have trouble cutting costs, becoming more efficient, and capturing a large share of the declining market from their competitors.

In addition, there are decision makers in each of those businesses who are aware of many of those issues. These problems cause them to lose sleep at night. Those issues will certainly put pressure on those decision makers.

Now, back to that hard-to-understand statement. The hidden job market exists only in the mind of the decision maker who has the power and authority to hire you. The jobs that flow from this market are not job ads in the paper or on any website. They are not listed in the personnel department of the company. Most likely, the decision-maker has not mentioned these tasks to anyone.

This last statement might really knock your socks off. Sometimes, and actually more often than you might expect, the DECISION MAKER DOESN’T EVEN KNOW THERE IS WORK! Wow! What a way to reduce your competition for a job. You may be the only one, including the person who can hire you, who knows that a job might be available.

It seems impossible, doesn’t it? I mean, how can he offer you a job if he doesn’t know that he has a job to offer? To understand this, you have to remember that every company has problems. You have to put yourself in front of decision makers who, even though they know they need to hire someone, know that they are under a lot of stress and pressure because of those issues. Remember, too, that these decision makers have the power and authority to create THAT JOB as a solution to the problem.
