Greenhouse Roof Styles

There are many styles of greenhouse roofs. I get asked all the time what the difference is. Well, some will give you a little more headroom, and some can give you a little more space to plant, but really the only difference is appearance.

· Right or gable style – This is basically the same roof style as a traditional or ranch style house. If you look at it from the end it is a triangular shape. There is a simple mathematical formula to calculate the long side of the roof, say if you want to buy shade cloth. You will need to know the width of the greenhouse and the height of the side and the height of the peak. You take the width of the middle of the greenhouse in inches and square it. You take the peak height and subtract the side wall height. Take this measurement in centimeters and square it and add it to the number you already had. Then you take the square footage of this addition and it’s the length of your greenhouse roof on one side. To determine the total roof, you simply multiply by two.

· Curved shingle roof – It is what it sounds like. You can find this in a tube frame that has polyfilm or polycarbonate on it. Or, you can find it in an aluminum frame with glass or polycarbonate. You may need to calculate the measurement on this to change polyfilm, polycarbonate or for a shade cloth. The easiest way to do this is to apply a tape measure to the frame and simply measure. There is no easy calculation because some of these are just not true half-rounds.

· Gambrel Shaped – This is also called a barn style roof. It consists of many angles that form a peak. It was best to calculate the size on this as well as the tape measure. These are not that common and are usually found in a resin (or plastic) frame.

Straight eave styles are available in several different roof pitches. Usually you will see 5 on 12, 8 on 12 or 12 on 12. What this tells you is the number of inches the roof drops in a 12″ distance. A 5 by 12 roof tile will drop 5″ for every foot the roof drops. A 12 by 12 square has a 45 degree angle at the top of the greenhouse.
