Dynamic Workshops – Tips to Make Your Powerful Presentations

Although it is interesting to give an inspirational story, As a speaker, I understand that motivation fades within two weeks and certainly within a month. That’s why I prefer giving workshops. My preferred structure is to present a topic over a two- to four-week period to allow for assignments and feedback that benefits everyone who participates. In this article I share some workshop tips that have worked for me, whether it’s a one-time workshop or an ongoing workshop.

Use the AIDA formula when developing your workshop. AIDA is a summary of the four main steps of a powerful presentation.

  • A stands for Attention. First, we need to attract the attention of the participants. Ask a question, start with some music or an interactive activity (sometimes I have everyone stand up and stretch, or sing along to a rap piece I posted).
  • Next, I stand for Interest. We must quickly establish, “What’s in it for me?” by drawing their interest and showing the benefits there.
  • D stands for Desire. At this point we share our participants’ how-tos and methods to solve a problem or achieve the results they are looking for, sparking the desire to solve new approaches.
  • And, the final A stands for Action. The last step in any great presentation is the call to action. What will they do, have they learned, and what actions will they take now? You can ask them.

Include participants.

  • You can also join the workshop participants, it will make your workshop more effective and dynamic. The guru of educational techniques, Robert Pike, in his excellent and informative book, Creative Education Technical Handbook states that, “People don’t argue with their data.”
  • Pike suggests that at the beginning of our workshop, we immediately engage them with the questions, “What kinds of problems do people have because __________________________________________________________________________ (For example, fill in the topic of your program, for example, communicate effectively, exercise, know how to handle conflicts, etc.)?” Then ask, “What happens when you and I ______ (fill in the same topic as in the first question)?” Depending on the time available, you can have someone write the answers on a flip chart, as these will be the benefits to be gained from the workshop.
  • When I work with a small group, I’ll often start with a fun activity and go around the participants, getting everyone to respond. For example, I have a company called, How to Achieve Your Basic Dream. I make a few introductory comments, and then ask each person, in turn, to introduce themselves, tell us what they did yesterday for a job (this is actually their career and/or job title) and then what are they doing today (this is just a dream job or career they make up out of thin air – “famous author on tour”, “Hollywood star”, etc.). I tell them not to worry about an answer, it’s just for fun. Additional questions as well as keeping your audience engaged throughout the workshop with you and/or other participants will keep your workshop alive and meaningful.
