## Excel Tip – How to Calculate The Percentage Difference Between Two Values

How do you calculate the percentage difference between values?. This really is one of the most asked questions of me in regards to Excel formulas. Excel has no built in formula to calculate this value, but there are a number of ways to get to the answer. Let’s look at four different ways to work this out with a variety of Excel formulas.

Option 1.

The syntax of this formula is-

=(new_value-original_value)/(original_value)

The original_value represents the value that the percentage change is to be based on, the new_value is the value that has changed. All you need to do then is format the result value as a percentage. This will show a positive or negative change.

Here is an example.

Our original Value is 100, our new value is 50. So the percentage change is -50%. In Excel, our formula would look like this

=(F2-D2)/D2

Where our new value is is cell F2, our original value is in D2. You will get a % difference of -50%.

Option 2.

The syntax of this formula is-

=(new_value-original_value)/abs(original_value)

The original_value represents the value that the percentage change is to be based on, the new_value is the value that has changed. The result of this part of the formula is the divided by the absolute value without its sign (for example, the absolute value of -5 is 5). All you need to do then is format the result value as a percentage.

In Excel, our formula would look like this

=(F2-D2)/ABS(D2)

Option 3.

The syntax of this formula is-

=(new_value/original_value)-1

The original_value represents the value that the percentage change is to be based on, the new_value is the value that has changed. Hit minus 1. All you need to do then is format the result value as a percentage. In Excel our formula looks like this

=(F2/D2)-1

Option 4.

The syntax of this formula is-

=(new_value-original_value)/original_value)*100

The original_value represents the value that the percentage change is to be based on, the new_value is the value that has changed. Just multiply by 100 to get the percentage change value. In Excel our formula will look like this-

=(F2-D2)/D2)*100

So, that is how you calculate a negative or positive percentage change between two values in Excel.
