10-Point Checklist For High Visibility in Google

Google is the leading search engine (SE) with no close competitor. Since joining is free, your web pages should be included. We will show you how to top Google’s SERPs, that is, to be found at the top of the search engine results pages. These techniques are known as search engine optimization (SEO) and require a small investment of your time.

I got two of my sites up on the SERPs in three months to get it done. My pages have few competitors: my challenge was mainly to overcome false positives such as resumes, job vacancies, articles, etc. If you’re competing with “real” sites that sell competitive products like the ones you read about in your spam emails, you can get there with a few perks in a year.

Purpose

Google default users use default settings, so your website should be in the top 20 results. Unfortunately, you cannot assume that visitors will use the most appropriate search terms. Real people are incredible.

Google SERP

You need to understand that SERP position is dynamic – what you see depends on a single factor. It depends on the location of the audience, the type of search used (basic, advanced, local, filtered, etc.), page content, keyword density, page rank (PR), search term (word or phrase). ), and so on. Therefore, you need to plan your website carefully.

Ten-Point Checklist

1. Domain Name and Server

Get a.ca domain if your audience is likely to search for Canadian websites. If your business is not local, use a global, top-level domain (gTLD) such as .com. A unique, keyword like “dentist-atlanta.com” should rank higher in the SERPs than “dentist.com” or “smithclinic.com” (if the search term might be “dentists in atlanta” or similar).

It is nice but not important if the web host gives your website a unique IP address, but it is highly advised to host your website on your own dedicated server. Shared web hosting means that one server can host thousands of websites, and Google’s spiders will slow down.

If you already have a website, you can find its IP address using cmd.exe or an MS-DOS command, for example “ping cnn.com” and call the IP address displayed in the browser. If you don’t see the expected web page, it has a shared IP address.

2. Page Title

A poorly planned page title is the Achilles Heel of a Web page. This is the text that appears at the top of the browser window.

The title text should be short and readable, avoiding unnecessary words and punctuation marks. Start with the most valuable words, for example “Specialist Dental Clinic, Mayfair, London”, not “**** Fred Smith, BDS – 5 Star Dental Clinic *****”, or worse, “Welcome. my home page”, or “Untitled”.

3. Style Sheet

Placing style definitions in a .css (Cascading Style Sheet) file moves the body text closer to the top of the document and reduces the size of the page. Many Javascript effects can be replaced by CSS. Fast loading pages are good for both humans and search engine crawlers.

4. Meta tags

Google ignores the Keywords meta tag for ranking but other SEs use it. An exception to the Description meta tag sometimes appears in the SERP; sometimes you see a piece of body text. Moderation and relevance should be your criteria for placing keywords in these tags.

5. Content

  • Quality content is rewarded with top placement in search results. For example, if you sell new cars, used cars, and car service, you would have three branches, each with pages related to that topic.
  • Links to popular causes, bookmarks, HTML validation, page counters, etc. can attract visitors to other sites.
  • Optimize images and keep page size low.
  • Place keywords at the top of pages and in heading tags such as H1. Don’t stick to one keyword for the entire site. Choose for different pages so you have more ways to see. Optimize for search terms used by your paying customers, if you can identify them, not casual visitors.
  • Consider (this depends on the size and nature of your business) placing non-commercial pages such as staff pages, personal hobbies, genealogy, etc. on a second level but not linked to the login page. Some of my ranking success comes from hosting my hobby pages under my commercial website, as I can’t justify buying a domain for each of my interests. I legitimately link them to my resume, which has a link to my business website. This allows free placement of secondary pages in paid directories.

6. Links and Folders

  • Link the sitemap to the home page so crawlers can find the rest of your pages.
  • Link each page to the home page and to others in its logical group (but not to any other page on the site). Anchor text should use keywords and phrases.
  • Do not use keywords for folders, image names and Alt text. For example /hamilton/lawyer/divorce.htm, alt=”Perth Plumber” The deeper your directory structure, the less likely it will be properly spidered.

7. Neighborhood Watch

Get quality inbound links from sites that share your topic. Without referrals, it is impossible to be visited by Googlebot. Try to get such links from sites with PR3 (Page Rank – see below) or better, not from link fields that are clearly designed to increase PR. Make it easy for other sites to use keyword loaded phrases in their links, say, by providing a cut-and-paste piece of HTML anchor code. Here is an example you can use to link to this page:

Links from lower ranking affiliates will not penalize you; they just won’t show up in Google’s list of backlinks to your page. You can’t control who links to you, but you do have control over who you link to.

Add a fair amount of outbound links to similar or better custom affiliates. Google likes links from authoritative websites, but don’t add too many external links. Even if such sites do not explicitly link to your site, their site statistics file may be crawled and link back to you.

8. Cloaking

Cloaking hides content from humans and SEs, which is generally a bad practice. Good reasons for hiding include hiding parts of your optimized pages from amateur competitors or showing different pages to different visitors based on their browsers.

Subscriber-only sites also manage to enter SE. They use a secret practice known as “agent name submission,” which is a code file that checks whether the visitor is a browser or a human. Crawlers can see the entire site, but others are directed to a registration form.

9. Avoidable Practices

The following actions can get your site banned from Google at worst or lower its ranking at best:

  • Gimmicks. Nonsensical Javascript effects like tracks and transitions do nothing for your audience but place a lot of code above your body text. You want your content near the top of the page.
  • Bad HTML code. Novice coders may copy some HTML tags without understanding their meaning. One webmaster used the robot directive
  • Many sites with repetitive content, eg http://www.example.net and http://www.example.com hosted on the same or different servers, as this is considered spamming. Use a consistent redirect on all secondary sites to point to the main site.
  • Multiple copies of the same page. This is usually an entry page or “gateway” with different keywords chosen to trick different people, eg crackz.htm, serials.htm, passwords.htm, etc.
  • Hidden content. This can be repeated text on the same color or a layer with coordinates that are different from the visible page. It begs the question why the author does not make this effort to create a visible text.
  • Flash-Only Pages. The solution is a user agent input control that displays Flash to enabled browsers, but displays plain HTML to crawlers and other human visitors.
  • Frames. Googlebot will crawl links in Noframes text, but not those in frame pages. Other SEs may not include frames, so it’s better to use tables and therefore CSS. If you must use frames, make sure you use the correct Doctype declaration for the frames. I noticed that Googlebot can now navigate links in frames but sometimes it can’t.
  • Shipping software or service. They can deliver your website thousands of anonymous SEs. You will get a lot of spam, abuse, and possible inclusion in link fields that will ruin your reputation in the eyes of Google. After all, can you name more than five major SEs?
  • Residence IDs. Sites that require session IDs from crawlers will have a poor visibility because the previous session will have expired when Googlebot returns.
  • Over-optimization. [Update 11/2003] Many sites that followed the strict “SEO formula” found that they could not be found at the top of the SERPs, or even in the index. There is speculation that such tactics lead to sites being filtered out of search results.

10. Patience

Once you’ve optimized and submitted your pages to Google, keep up with your business growth, because Google takes time to rank you. Work on getting quality, internal links from high-ranking websites that cover the same topic. Add your own content and keep it fresh. Get free or paid listings in Google AdWords, Overture, Yahoo, the Open Directory Project (dmoz.org), and popular search engines such as MSN, Yahoo!, and Ask Jeeves.
