New Year’s Resolutions – Will You Stick To Them?

Maybe you’ll actually stick to your new year’s resolution but if I were a betting man, I’d say you’ll crash and burn pretty quickly if you haven’t already. At least, that’s what the statistics say. Dr. Norcross of Stanton University told journalist Ira Flatow in 2012 that only 4% of Americans keep their New Year’s resolutions*. It is clear that his education was in the USA; However, you can consider this as an approximation for most developed countries. But it’s not all doom and gloom as Dr Norcross also said that of those Americans who do DO, 46% will still be on the road in 6 months. I think it’s very impressive so what can we avoid from this? So Why Don’t Most New Year’s Resolutions Stick?

In my opinion, it is very easy because you have set a date. If you’re really ready to make a life change like lose weight, quit smoking, start writing your novel, or whatever, do you really think you’ll wait for a specific day to start doing it? do Why don’t you start right away? Because you want an excuse not to do it – “I’ll start on January 1st” is a masochistic way of looking for a reason not to do it at all. If you are serious about making a change, start it right away. Don’t just smoke that cigarette, don’t just open that chocolate bar and just start writing – like I’m doing now. It’s not that hard to do something if you DECIDE you’re going to do it and setting a start date is just a reason to never start, like the other 96%.

Now I’m not saying don’t change – of course not, because change is the only thing that can improve your life and help you achieve your dreams, what I’m saying is that it’s time to make the DECISION to change and take it . Urgent action, don’t wait.

How to Beat Odds

If you want to beat the odds, here are some suggestions to keep your New Year’s Resolution going (and remember, if you’ve already broken it, who cares? Just decide to change and DO IT NOW):

  1. Write down your desired change and leave it somewhere that will be important. Those who keep it, put it on your fridge. Smokers, put it on your locker or the door you pass through to get to your smoking area. Writers, do what I did and set yourself a daily pop-up that asks, “Have you written 1,000 words today?” that I have to check. If I don’t check it, it’s red until I do and if I check it improperly – who am I trying to fool? I use a free program called NiftyList.
  2. Stop the activities. Yeah right. In order to act, you must stop doing something else. It’s your hand that lights a smoke, it’s your hand that holds the food and it’s your brain that tells you something is more important than writing at this second. They are all you, so change what you do and you will definitely change you.
  3. Make short-term goals to reach your long-term goal. Maybe eat 1 day without sugar, or go 1 day without smoking. When you reach that goal, reward yourself and then set the next one. NO! Don’t reward yourself with another vice. Did I really have to say that? Maybe, maybe not, but to be clear, rewarding yourself with a “better version” of your old habit or a different habit won’t help. You have already associated your bad habit with an unhealthy reward so you need to break that association completely. What I mean by this is that a dieter should not reward himself with any kind of food even if it is the good kind. A smoker should not reward himself with another vice such as food or alcohol. A writer should not reward himself with a TV show or other means of procrastination. My suggestion is to reward yourself with time. Take half an hour to read a good book or take a walk, as long as it is something that is far from your bad habits and will have a positive effect on your mind.
  4. Make a daily list and keep your mind occupied with tasks that will lead you in the right direction or at least keep you away from your vice. Yes, I would say the typical thing: take up a hobby. But here’s a suggestion, take up a hobby that embodies a childhood dream. Think back to when you said, “I’m going to be a pop star,” (take singing lessons), “I’m going to be a firefighter” (volunteer), “I’m going to be an actor,” (join a local theater group), “I’m going to be an astronaut, ” (join an astronomy group). Or here’s an idea, join some form of education that will feed your childhood dream. There are many short courses and even college courses available online these days. If you just get a little angry and think, “I don’t have time for that!” think about it. Isn’t it time to reward yourself for achieving your goals? If you’re still saying you won’t have time, stop reading now because nothing else I can say will change your mind.
  5. Write a blog and hold yourself accountable in general. This is not for everyone, it’s just a suggestion. Maybe you can do a weekly vlog (virtual blog uploaded to YouTube) or start a free blog on WordPress. If you do, let me know and I’ll be happy to follow up.
  6. Just do it! This is indeed it. No one can do it for you. If you are comfortable with it, seek help and support from friends, family and professionals. If you do not seek help, then you must remember that you are only responsible for yourself. Don’t lie to yourself. Accept when you take a step back – it will happen, but the main thing is that you are moving forward.
  7. You only fail when you stop trying. You’ll notice that I’ve avoided the word “failure” throughout this article. I think it’s a word saved for those who choose not to try. If you try something throughout your life but never reach your ultimate goal, you are not a failure because you never stopped trying. Successes are guaranteed when you try, even if they are small.

Good luck with your New Year’s resolutions if you’ve made one, but remember, resolutions themselves mean nothing. Your decision to improve yourself is the only goal worth pursuing.
