There are many types of garage door openers out there, so which one is right for you?? The first thing you should know is that garage door openers are not a one size fits all application. Garage door openers are made to work better if it’s the right type of door, most of our repairs are on machines that are either installed incorrectly or the opener is wrong on the type of door, and in most cases it’s just a bug. quality opening.

These machines have been popular for 45 years on all types of doors (not necessarily good) but … due to their design they require regular maintenance. Back in the late 6Os, 7Os and early 8Os, Genie used a very durable steel in the “roller” or “trolley” and the machines were tough! Even without oil on the shaft they will run for what seems like forever, then they switched to a lighter steel and everything that went down, the opener will still go as far as there is, provided you oil regularly, but who ever does that!! So the average lifespan of a Genie sweeper trolley was about 4-5 years and that’s generous, Liftmaster or Chamberlain or Craftsman, all made by the same mfg…(Chamberlain) also has a sweeper and owns it is same problem for the reverse they use a plastic inner trolley and a self-lubricating housing around the screw to keep the heat in and seal, but the actual housing only lasts a year..or the equivalent of your warranty then back it up from the same religion, the same religion, “grease-grease-grease”. My official opinion on drivers is… stay away from them, they are old technology with a new look to them.
This type of machine is designed to give or take a 5 year cycle and it is well maintained. Chain-drives have always been very reliable machines but got a bit of a bad rap when Sears started selling a do-it-yourself model from Chamberlain called the Craftsman. a chain on one side and a cable on the other and it looked like nothing could be done to keep the thing quiet as the cable would stretch until it snapped at the loop. So since then chain drives have gotten a bad rap as “ice creamers” or buzzing machines, even though it wasn’t an actual chain drive.
The Liftmaster 1300 series of chain drives… dollar for dollar a machine are as versatile as you can get, so they can handle any type of door from heavy wood to light steel, one-piece or sectional and they are strong and are cheap and relatively speaking … low maintenance, but they’ve seen a lot of good progress along the way to get to this point. Chamberlain has added a chain spreader, which keeps the chain off the track, they’ve changed the front bumper to drastically reduce chain noise, they’ve replaced the steel worm gear with a nylon worm gear inside the case to reduce heat on the helical gear, and they’ve added two springs. take the tension off the inner trolley to reduce door swing and it’s a solid one piece track with a full hinge.
The parts on this machine can handle what the engine puts out, so in most cases you don’t need 1/2 hp to lift the door, and as far as routine maintenance goes.. almost none, just have two nylon gears inside the engine case are lubricated every 7 years and that’s it, in the rare case that you happen to have a beach house and only use the opener in the summer then you can spray the chain with a good silicone to protect yourself. links on the free chain. The two models I prefer that have been real workhorses for us over the last couple of decades are now called #1346=1/3 hp and #1356=1/2 hp.
Many manufacturers make belt drives these days but I like to stick with the most reliable brand for me which is Liftmaster, we carry a lot of brands but prefer to deal with the brand with the least issues so we focus on focus on Liftmaster belt drives for now. Remember that a belt-drive opener is a VERY door specific machine, they do NOT work very well or very long on 1pc doors and should NOT be installed on a 1pc door. To keep it simple there are two types of belt drives…AC and DC.
The AC model belt drive, known as the formula I, is one of the early model belt drive designs and is basically a chain drive motor that drives a belt instead of a chain. It’s quieter than a chainsaw and to me it’s a bit quieter…not a good machine, but an easy sell because it’s cheaper than a DC model and the public doesn’t know the difference, they just know it’s supposed to be the upper belt drives. and this is a belt drive, so they are not wise to tricks, dealers can buy these types of machines much cheaper than their DC motor counterparts and sell them for the belt-drive (premium) price. What makes a belt drive “DC motor” quiet is the motor! Why else would they offer it in DC as well, plus the other benefit is being able to have a battery charger attached to it so it will work even with disconnected power.

Jack-Shaft (Direct Drive)
This part is easy because there’s really only one and that’s Liftmaster #3800, and it will only work on doors in the part.
