The Importance of Setting Goals
There is no doubt that setting goals is important for achievement. Obviously you can’t get anywhere if you don’t know where you’re going!
We all have dreams and we all think from time to time:
“I really like to…”
“I really like to be…”
“I would really like to have…”
And so on………
But, how many of us go further? How do we make our dreams come true?
Well, the most effective way is by setting goals. Goal setting is used by most people, in fact most of the achievements in life.
Achieving the goals you set for yourself is not only a great way to develop your life the way you want, but the benefits of that achievement are many:
- You will see your self-confidence increase
- Your pleasure will increase
- Your relationships will improve
- Your stress will decrease
- Your health will improve
It’s all because you control your life, instead of letting life control you!
Your First Steps to Setting Goals
First find a quiet place to sit where you won’t be disturbed.
Enter what you want to win by category.
Your categories can include any or all of the following:
- The family
- Health and fitness
- Contribution (volunteer/charity work)
If you’ve never tried setting goals before, I’d suggest maybe starting with just one or two of these. The worst thing you can do is pay too much to succeed as this will only cause you to give up before you’ve barely even started.
If you are unsure about the whole process, just give yourself some small goals that you can easily achieve when you use the act of writing down something you want to achieve and achieve it. Then you can start giving yourself bigger goals and eventually start giving yourself goals of different levels and in many areas of your life.
There is a formula for achieving goals that depends on whether you want to achieve one or more goals, and that formula for SMART goals is as follows:
S – Special
M – Measure
A – Access
R – Realist
T – Time dependent
An example of a SMART goal would be:
“I want to lose 14 kilos by 12/21/10.”
S – This is especially true if you want to lose weight
M – It is measured because you specified 14 pounds
ONE and R – It’s achievable and realistic because you didn’t say you wanted to lose 14 pounds by the end of the week, you gave yourself three months to achieve it.
T – Time depends because you have given yourself a certain date to reach.
Long Term Goals
If you have long-term goals, you can turn them into GOLD goals.
that one E e – Evaluation
that one R e – Reevaluate
In fact, this means that long-term goals need to be more flexible. The situation can change and that means you have to go back to your goals and adjust them. For example, you may have decided that you want to add an extension to your home this year but after you achieve that goal you are offered a promotion at work and as a result you have to move your home. Obviously, you don’t need to extend the house you currently live in.
Reassessing your goals is NOT an excuse to keep posting goals because you put little or no effort into achieving them; It should only be done when you really need to fix them for a good reason. Remember if you fool yourself with your goals, you are only fooling yourself!
On the upside, you can see that an income goal you set for yourself has been reached so you can adjust your goal upwards.
Break Them Down
Very big goals, like “I want to own my own business” can be very scary and put into words, but also very vague because you don’t have a plan of how you will actually achieve them.
Don’t give up though, you can achieve big goals, you just need to break down into smaller ones.
You’ll need to have a really good brain on paper to break down all the things you need to do to make it happen using the SMART formula above.
Remember that old saying: “How do you eat an elephant? One at a time.”
Goals should be broken down into a daily to-do list. This is an ideal way to keep yourself on track.
Don’t forget to congratulate yourself for every goal you reach because every time, you’re one big step closer to your dreams!
Your way to success is by setting goals and achieving them guaranteed.
