Baby Got Gas? A Guide to Baby Indigestion

Have you ever heard of baby sickness? Do you even know what it is? Think about cravings and cravings and how they can make you feel. The pressure deep in your chest and stomach is enough to make you feel like you’re having a heart attack. Now imagine that feeling on a 2 week old baby. YIKEES!!! I can tell you that whatever you feel is 100% amplified in your child. Adding to the intense pain the child feels is that he has no way of telling you how he feels. They can’t say “my stomach hurts”.

What causes babies to get sick?

Well, in adults there are several reasons, but, for babies, I think we can safely eliminate drinking alcohol, smoking and eating spicy food! It is also very bad for babies with stomach ulcers or gallstones. This means that we can focus on food allergies and sensitivities as the 2 main causes of illness in babies. So now that we have a general idea of the potential causes of illness in babies; How can we tell if our baby has gastroenteritis?

Symptoms of constipation in babies can include:

• Confusion and/or crying that may stop after running out of gas

• Being angry

• Constipation

• Insomnia

• Unloved food scraps in the stool (okay, let’s call it poof, that’s what it is!)

• Bad breath and in severe cases diarrhea

Now it is very important to understand one thing; and that not eating in itself is not a cause or disease. It’s just a sign. So what we need to do is to find the real cause of the baby’s illness. So be aware that the real causes of sickness in babies are:

• Spoiled food

• Food allergy

• Food sensitivities

Malnutrition and Childhood Illness

Spoiled food is not good for adults as it can cause all kinds of stomach problems and it is no different for our children. So if you’re feeding your baby formula – make sure the best before date hasn’t passed. Additionally, you should be extra careful when sterilizing all bottles and equipment that come with baby formula. Make sure the water you give your baby or use to mix powdered formula is safe and boiled.

Another thing we should avoid doing at all costs is reheating the bottles. Mothers who are guilty of this act please, please, PLEASE START. If the baby doesn’t eat it all, throw it away. Also if you are pumping breast milk, make sure you ONLY use sterilized containers to store it. Refrigerate and use the milk within a few days or store it in the freezer to keep it longer. Just following these simple tips can significantly reduce baby sickness.

Oops!!! Now he turned his attention to spoiled food. Well, what about food allergies and how do babies get allergies when they only eat one thing?? ï Š So this is also reasonable? Read on.

First of all it can be confusing trying to differentiate between food allergies and sensitivities. So how can you tell the difference and how does it relate to baby sickness?

Allergies and food sensitivities and intolerances in infants – Formula

First of all, we must understand that allergies can cause strong reactions such as hives and severe itching, vomiting, swelling of soft tissues such as ears and lips, or can be dangerous with anaphylactic shock reactions. Sensitive; however, they are milder and cause less severe indigestion, discomfort, constipation and skin irritation. You know those foods that just ‘don’t agree’ with you.

It is very common for babies to be allergic or sensitive to cow protein. Take comfort in the fact that most will grow out of this within a year, but that first year can be difficult. For those formula-fed moms, you’ll need to switch to a soy-based formula or one made specifically for babies with cow protein sensitivity.

Oh, there is one word of caution; and that is, it is common for babies with a cow protein allergy to also have a soy protein allergy. However, make sure there are formulas out there that do not contain soy or cow’s milk.

Food allergies and intolerances in infants – Breast feeding

If you are breastfeeding, eliminate all dairy from your diet. Because the foods you eat pass through your milk to your baby. So your milk can contain traces of milk protein from the dairy cows you eat. So, I mean cut out ALL milk if you want to reduce baby sickness. Start reading food labels!!

Trust me, I know this sounds silly, I’ve done it myself in the past. As your body detoxifies and the milk works its way through your system, you’ll get a few headaches and feel like crap for a few days. Basically, you will go through a bit of a withdrawal. Cheese as an addiction…who knew?

The Fix – replace cow’s milk with goat’s milk as this is generally very well tolerated. After breastfeeding my kids for 6 months, I switched them both to goat milk and guess what?? They still love it. It is available at most major grocery stores and can be frozen if you need to stock up!

So how can you relieve your baby of Baby Sickness?

You can use gripe juice for ‘instant’ relief from not feeding babies. You can get this at any drug store, and many health food stores have an alternative with all natural ingredients. I’ve also tried some of the tablets on the market – most manufacturers call it Colic, so look for products that say Colic Relief or something similar. The label “Colic” is a bit of a misnomer, as colic in babies may have nothing to do with not feeding, but that’s a discussion for another newsletter!

In addition, you can give your baby stomach muscles and baby pacifiers to reduce indigestion. Keep in mind though that none of these “quick fix” techniques are intended to cause indigestion; they only treat the symptoms.

A more long-term solution to the problem is to look for food sensitivities and allergies that may be causing the illness in the first place.

How can this be done?

By analyzing your baby’s stool sample, your doctor will be able to determine whether or not there is an unwanted cow’s protein and whether your baby is allergic to milk.

As always, if you are concerned, I recommend talking to a medical or naturopathic doctor about your baby’s symptoms.
