Tea’s Potential for Weight Loss
Losing weight is a topic on many people’s minds. It’s no secret that long-term weight loss and long-term maintenance require long-term lifestyle changes. In order to successfully lose weight and keep it off, you must eat fewer calories than your body needs every day. This allows your body to use stored fat as energy instead of food.
So, eating less is only half of the equation. Since you can only reduce your calorie intake so much, it’s important to also increase the calories your body uses each day. That’s why exercise is so important. Exercise burns calories while you exercise, but it also increases your metabolic rate for several hours after you’re done.
Exercising by lifting weights can also help increase your metabolic rate in the long run. Because muscle requires more calories to maintain, even when resting, building muscle is a great way to help you burn more calories all the time.
So, when you’re trying to lose weight, it’s important to focus on increasing your metabolism. Part of this equation involves drastically reducing calorie intake. When you significantly reduce the number of calories you eat, your body begins to go into starvation mode, actually conserving calories and fat. This can stop your weight loss progress.
A better way to lose weight is to reduce your calorie intake slightly, but put most of your effort into increasing the number of calories you burn each day. Exercise is the most important way to do this, but there is another way you can increase your metabolic rate that most people don’t know about.
The secret is tea. Many studies have shown that tea has the ability to help in weight loss by increasing the metabolic rate. Additionally, tea seems to block the absorption of fat in your diet, which may help you lose weight as well.
This ability to limit fat absorption may be one of the reasons why drinking tea lowers cholesterol. When triglycerides (a type of fat) increase, cholesterol also increases.
However, probably the most important quality that tea has to help with weight loss is its ability to influence metabolism. Tea has long been believed by the Chinese to help with weight control, but there hasn’t been much research done on the subject.
However, with all the recent attention that tea has received for its ability to slow aging and prevent disease, more research is being done on all of tea’s potential.
For example, there are many studies that show that tea, especially green tea, can prevent heart disease and cancer. Tea is a powerful source of antioxidants, which scientists have discovered are the keys to good health.
Anti-oxidants are important because they fight free radicals that are created as a byproduct of the digestive process. Free radicals are oxygen molecules that damage cells and DNA if left unchecked. However, a regular diet of antioxidants can stop free radicals from damaging our bodies.
Anti-oxidants are found in many plant sources, including fruits and vegetables, but none are more powerful than those in tea. Therefore, tea has gained great interest as a healthy drink.
A study, conducted by the University of Tokushima in Japan, tried to verify the effect of tea on the body’s energy expenditure, or the number of calories burned. The study was conducted on men who did not consume caffeine or flavonoids (antioxidants in tea) for four days prior to the start of the study.
The study lasted three days, during which the subjects consumed a typical American diet. Each subject was assessed before the study to obtain a measure of his normal daily energy expenditure. Subjects were divided into four groups. Groups were given one of four regimens:
o strong tea
o Half strength tea
o Water containing 270 mg of caffeine (about the same amount found in strong tea)
The study found that, compared to men who drank water, men who drank strong tea had a 2.9 percent increase in energy expenditure and men who drank caffeinated water had a 3.4 percent increase in energy expenditure.
However, men who drank tea at full strength also had a 12% increase in fat oxidation over those who drank water. This increase in fat oxidation was not seen in men who drank caffeinated water.
Therefore, this study suggests that caffeine helps speed up metabolism. However, it also tells us that caffeine isn’t the only thing that makes tea an effective weight loss aid. Other elements in tea, possibly antioxidants, are responsible for tea’s ability to oxidize fat in a way that caffeine alone cannot.
Tea is a healthy drink, and worldwide, it is the second most consumed beverage after water. Therefore, using tea as a weight loss aid is a safe way to help you increase your chances of losing those extra pounds. If tea isn’t already part of your weight loss plan, why not add it today?
