Making Your Purpose Your Business Step #1 – Discovering Your Purpose
There is no such thing as a “small” job. Every function in our society contributes to our increasingly technological lifestyles and well-being. From a store clerk to a business manager, every position is an intricate part of the matrix of our world. We rely on these functions without realizing their value and contribution to our daily activities. Everyone has a place and everyone has a purpose. The key is to explore and take the time to learn what you will truly contribute to the world.
What is even more difficult is that one is often presented with many roles in one’s life in addition to one’s “purpose”. We are parents, workers, spouses and children. All require time and effort from our daily lives. What is important is that we balance our time and roles to develop our inner goals and abilities. Discovering your goals and objectives takes time and effort, but it is a search that should not be overlooked.
A common excuse for honing our skills is that we are too busy with other activities. When in reality we may have overstretched our time and resources. Take a moment to sit and notice what is taking up your time in your life. And then after you make that list, make a column and mark what’s the priority, what really “must” be done. Be sure to pay attention to how much personal time you are deducting from all of your other responsibilities. Start small and see if you can set aside at least half an hour or an hour a day to devote to yourself without interruption. Use this time to evaluate your life path. Are you doing what you want to do now? If yes, what can you do to improve your progress? If not, what do you want to do?
Use free thinking in your evaluation. Free thinking means that there are no limits. You can dream to be anything you want to be. Think about what you want to do whether you are paid or not. Think about what makes you feel good as a person. Maybe you like the arts or maybe you like to work outside. Compare your expectations with your current life situation. Are you close to your goals or are you far away?
After you have expressed your wishes, make notes in a special notebook dedicated only to you. It’s great to see your ideas take shape as they hit the paper and it’s also a great way to look at your progress on days when you might feel like there’s none. You will also need a notebook for the next steps. You can personalize this notebook and make it interesting for you.
Don’t feel guilty for taking this special time for yourself. Realize that your commitment to yourself will reflect on others. By improving yourself, you become better at all the roles and tasks you take on. When we stop to listen to our true selves and the nature of our lives we can create abundance in our environment and those around us. What you are doing is investing on a personal basis.
If you only have half an hour or an hour a day, make a list of things you want to accomplish with that time. So when the clock starts ticking you are ready to be productive and work on your goals. Time management is good practice from the start. So once you figure out what your goal is, you’ll be ready to use every minute you get effectively.
Once you figure out where you want to go or what direction you want to take in life, then take the time to research… research… research. Research is an important component of developing your career strategy. Go to the library or do an online search for the topic you want to study. Find out what tools you will need to start your goal. Will you need additional training or education? Will you need a business loan? Or are you going to use your personal resources to get started? Don’t let money problems stop your progress. Remember that knowledge is money here. There are ways to achieve your goal with less funds.
Remember that real life goals take real life work. Of course some people are lucky, but often others have to really dedicate themselves to their success. Keep an open mind during this period of self-evaluation and the rest will follow. Most importantly, be as patient with yourself as you would be with anyone else. Second, persistence is key in the formula for success. You have to be willing to make a serious commitment to yourself from day one. Your thoughts may change form along the way, but at least you continue to achieve self-fulfillment.
As a shortcut to doing this step, write it down, take a pen and paper and create a personal ambition of your desires or things you are good at and enjoy. What do you feel passionate about? What do you want to do if you don’t get paid? Second, be honest with yourself. Don’t feel ashamed or guilty about recognizing your talents…that’s what they’re for, to be recognized. It is up to you to release them and share them with others. Make your goal, your business.
