How To Get Rid Of Canker Sores

Cancer Sores

They are small and inconspicuous, but painful, persistent and annoying. They may occur on your tongue, inside your cheeks or lips, or under your gums. They are called Aphthous Ulcers, but are commonly known as canker sores.

They are different from the unrelated oral disease known as cold sore. A cold sore almost always starts on your lips, and may not even spread into the soft tissue of your mouth, while canker sores start inside the mouth. Cold sores are also caused by a highly contagious type of herpes virus. Canker sores are not caused by a virus, and are not contagious at all. Cancer lesions are more common in women, and it is estimated that 10% of the population have recurring problems with them. Only half of the cases of canker sores have a previous family history.

The exact mechanism that causes them has not been determined, but the likely cause is an overreaction of a person’s immune system. For some unknown reason, the immune system recognizes an invading agent inside the oral mucosa that is not actually there. The job of the immune system is to recognize invaders, and send white blood cells to deal with them. In the case of cancer, the white blood cells attack the healthy tissue that is doing its job. The resulting tissue damage is cancer.

As with many similar problems, the best way to get rid of them is to never get them in the first place. With that in mind, here are some potential causes of canker sores. Avoiding them will help.

Canker Sore Causes

Toothpaste. Toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulfate may have a drying effect on the tissues of the mouth, break down the surface protection, and may cause the onset of pain. If canker sores are a problem, toothpaste that is free of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can help.

broke In one study, 38% of people who developed canker sores reported some damage to the tissue inside their mouth before the sores developed. These include self-inflicted bites, or irritation from sharp teeth. Since very few people intentionally damage the inside of their mouth, you may want to avoid this.

Repeat. Stress is blamed for everything that can go wrong with your health and canker sores are no exception. It is good to avoid stress. If it helps reduce the incidence of canker sores, that’s even better.

Food Deficiency. Some studies have shown that people who often develop canker sores also suffer from a nutritional deficiency. Deficiency of vitamins: B1, B2, B6, B12, C and other nutrients: zinc, folic acid, iron, selenium, calcium are all associated with lesions. Like stress, lack of nutrition is blamed for many health problems, and you should avoid it beforehand.

Allergic reactions. There are many things that can cause canker sores by what is actually a type of allergic reaction of the oral tissues to a substance. The list of suspected foods here reads like an inventory list for your local grocery store. Have you added anything new to your diet recently? Systematically try removing certain foods to see if that helps clear up the problem.

Hormonal Changes and Genetic Disorders. These are things you won’t be able to avoid, so if it’s the cause of your canker sores, you might as well just run out of treatment options.

It is important to note that canker sores are sometimes associated with other medical problems, some of them serious. If the problem occurs frequently, if for no other reason than to rule them out as a concern, a visit to the doctor is recommended.

Since many of the above are difficult or impossible to avoid, you may very well end up with cancer, so let’s look at some of the most reputable ways to get rid of them.

Recovery from Canker Wounds

1. Stop

Canker sores usually go away on their own within 7-10 days. Pain can be reduced with a careful diet (avoid spicy, acidic foods, or other foods that irritate them) or by using over-the-counter anesthetics.

2. Some tried and true folk remedies

* Acidophilus taken in capsule form or as an ingredient in plain yogurt may stimulate the immune system. Taking 2-4 capsules four times a day with milk has proven to both reduce pain and speed up the healing process.

* Aloe juice can be used as a mouthwash several times a day.

* Alum from the spice section of your grocery store will reduce pain and speed healing, but will burn like crazy for a few minutes after application. Do this once or twice a day, but be prepared for burning, and then rinse your mouth well.

* Antacid formulas such as Mylanta and Milk of Magnesia have been reported to reduce pain and speed recovery.

* Baking soda is a wonderful remedy that can be used in powder form, or made into a poultice and applied directly to the pain. This is another one that may sting a little at first, but repeated treatments are reported to clear up canker sores in a few days.

* Copper sulfate, also called bluestone, is a remedy that has been used for over two hundred years. It’s hard to see, but the pain should clear up in a day or two. Consult your doctor before trying this.

* Stay clean: Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with antibacterial mouthwash often.

* Avoid salty and sour foods.

* You can use a non-medicated oral antiseptic gel or spray for pain.

* Oral use of hydrogen peroxide can help clear up canker sores and kill bacteria.

* Wash your mouth with salt water or saline

* Drink sengal tea and spend time in your mouth.

* Wash three times a day with vinegar mixed with a teaspoon of salt.

* A baking soda/water paste applied directly to canker sores can help speed healing.

* Try switching to another brand of toothpaste.

* Clove oil applied directly to the cancer pain will numb it.

* Please share any cancer pain remedies you may know using the form at the bottom of the page.

There are a variety of other folk remedies. These include hydrogen peroxide, raw onion, onion juice used as a mouthwash, cutting papaya leaves and applying a tea bag on the pain. Perhaps the best approach is to try them all, and find what works best for you.

There are also many herbal remedies. Some like burdock and lady’s mantle are made into a tea and you just drink them. Others like Goldenseal are made into mouth washes or pastes and applied directly to the sore. Additionally, there are many products online designed for use with canker sores, but these usually only treat the pain associated with the canker sores, and are not intended to rid your mouth of canker sores.

3. Don’t wait.

Understanding that a cancerous lesion is an ongoing process that takes place inside your mouth means that the sooner you attack the process, the sooner you can reverse it and begin to heal. Even using a regular antiseptic mouthwash right from the onset of the sore can stop it in its tracks. The idea is that you don’t wait until the cancer pain has reached its full potential before starting treatment. Oral exams are a good idea if canker sores are an ongoing problem. Start the treatment of your choice when you think one is starting.

4. Prevent them by all means

Understanding a little about the cause of canker sores can help. If you have a problem with them, anything you can do to help your immune system will help with the cancer pain problem. Taking vitamins, getting proper rest, stress-reducing exercise and a good diet can all help. Avoid foods that may cause oral trauma. Some people even recommend that potato chips be avoided by children who have problems with canker sores. Most people with chronic caries problems report that using SLS free toothpaste is the best preventative measure they have found. They also recommend frequent mouthwash and frequent toothbrush changes. The real idea is that anything that cleans your mouth and removes bacteria will help.
