Bearded Dragon Food – How to Ensure Your Pet Has a Long and Healthy Life
Food for bearded dragons is straightforward and easy to access. Feeding your bearded dragon the right food can help your pet live a longer and healthier life. Bearded dragons are very easy to feed and shouldn’t pose any problems to the dragon owner. The type of food you feed your dragon will vary depending on its age.
Eat your food only every few hours. Feeding bearded dragons is best when wet but always make sure you remove uncooked food every day as adding water to dried formulas can cause rapid spoilage and fermentation. Feeding Bearded Dragons dry diets with low moisture content is unnatural and may cause them to become dehydrated. Store your food in a cool, dry place to ensure its freshness.
A bowl of fresh and clean drinking water should always be in your living room. Always feed them something made for them! Insects should not be larger than the space between the dragon’s eyes. Chickpeas and other insects should be dusted and surface loaded with dusted supplements such as calcium, vitamins and minerals. Insects should be a daily staple in your bearded dragon’s diet and greens should always be available. Insects can be purchased from your local pet store or from an indoor zoo (without the use of pesticides).
Vegetables should make up a significant part of your Bearded Dragon’s diet: 10-25% for cubs and juveniles, 30-50% for adults. Variety is important, but cruciferous vegetables and dark leafy greens are two top choices, especially for babies. Vegetables should be fed to your dragon daily. All of these foods are readily available in the produce section of your local grocery store.
Feed your bearded dragon 10 – 12 bites at a time and a few bites. If they eat it all then give a few more. Do this 3 times a day around 11:00, 15:00 and 18:00 (assuming your lights are on 9-9:00). Feeding your bearded dragon too many foods like Celery will lead to a condition called fatal Vitamin A poisoning. Squashes should be baked or microwaved before roasting. Eating pinkie bees is an option and not a requirement, it’s really a personal choice.
Chowder water pillows help your chicks live longer by keeping them hydrated. Just soaking it once will keep your throat hydrated for days. The pellets themselves should be fed a good quality commercial rabbit food for 2 days before being fed to your bearded dragon. They can be replaced with waxworms, canned flowers and canned silkworms.
Chicks can be kept in a critter enclosure or similar with some food and water at normal room temperature. I have to get about 300 at a time, so I find mine last the longest when I put some hard boiled eggs down as their beds and put a big piece of eggshell in the middle. Mosquitoes are a very popular mosquito repellent and are easy to find in any pet store that sells repellents. It can be provided to older bearded dragons but is not recommended for juveniles as the insect’s hard shell can cause irritation. Don’t leave any uneaten chicks in your tank overnight as they can cause your dragon to sleep.
I’m very lucky because my wife loves our bearded dragon more than I do and often laughs at herself when she brings the kittens home on the bus. He loves watching his passengers search the entire bus for the crickets that sing in his bag!
As you can see, feeding your pet is very easy. Always remember that variety is the formula for success with feeding the bearded dragon.
