What Is the Difference Between a Concrete Noun and an Abstract Noun?

Concrete Nouns

These are things we can physically see, hear, smell, taste and feel. They are things that physically affect one or more of our five senses. They are very easy to recognize because they are usually preceded by one of the following articles: a, an, or. If one of these articles is placed in front of the word, and it is good when spoken, then it is almost certain that a concrete noun has been found. However, there are always exceptions to the rule!

Veronica whipped up a strawberry ice cream.

Ice is a concrete noun, because we see its color, we can taste the ice and feel its coolness on our tongue.

He sat at the table to eat.

Table is a concrete noun because we can both see it and feel it when we sit down to eat dinner.

Less obvious concrete nouns are things like: heat, electricity and air, because we cannot see them, although we physically affect them. These are also more difficult to recognize because we cannot use all the articles before them. Heat, electricity and air, for example, do not speak correctly, and do not follow English grammar, although we can use the article in front of them.

Abstract nouns

These are things we CANNOT physically see, hear, smell, taste, or feel, even though they affect our lives in some way.

Beauty, Truth, Falsehood, Knowledge, Understanding, Justice, Impartiality, Glory, Power, Wisdom, Love and Hate are all abstract nouns, which can be placed into three different categories.

1. Nouns that describe quality.

(a) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

(b) I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

(c) There is no justice in the world.

2. Nouns that describe a state.

(a) A good professional has a lot of knowledge.

(b) I have to sleep for an hour every day in the afternoon.

(c) I believe he was here.

3. Nouns that describe an Event or Action.

(a) The boxers will fight tonight.

(b) I will answer later today.

(c) They heard the girl whisper to me.

What color is beauty? We don’t know because we can’t see it. What does justice sound like? We don’t know because we can’t hear. How is your sleep? We don’t know because we can’t smell it. What does the answer taste like? We don’t know because we can’t taste it. How does Whisper feel? We don’t know because we can’t feel a pulse.

Remembering: If we can physically see, hear, smell, taste, or feel something, then it may be a concrete noun, but if we can’t use any of our five senses, even though it affects our lives in some way makes us, then it is probably an abstract noun.
