Manmohan Desai (Making The Impossible Possible)
On this day, February 26, 1937, a child was born to Kalavati and Kikubhai Desai. I respect this talented producer and director, none other than the talented Manmohan Desai. Let me take this opportunity to share some interesting stories of this legend who believed, “Anhonee Ko Honee Karna Hamara Kaam Hai” (Doing the impossible is our job).
The Early Years
Born on 26th February, Manmohan Ji was four years old when he started living in Khetwadi in Mumbai. He was born in a Gujarati family but his love and his home has always been the dream city of traders called Mumbai. The love for the city of Mumbai has often been shown on screen in his films.
There was a time when neither Khatwadi’s nor Manmohan Ji’s address appeared on city maps. Back then, in the early 80s, not many people had heard of Khatwadi. No doubt the taxi drivers looked blank when asked for the address of MKD Films.
His father was a film producer who owned Paramount Studios (later Filmalaya) and produced films between 1931 and 1941. His father died at a young age of 39 from a ruptured appendix. The family also owned a large bungalow in Versova but the sudden death of his father left behind heavy responsibilities and debts.
Manmohan Ji’s mother was very clear, “No, I don’t want to live on debt”. She sold the bungalows and owned cars to repay the loans. The only thing she didn’t sell was the studio because that was their monthly income then.
Making the Impossible Possible
Manmohan Ji’s first directorial film was “Chhalia” starring actor Raj Kapoor in the lead role. The film was shot in black and white and the name of the song should not be forgotten “Chhalia Mere Naam”. It is learned that the creative ideas and concepts regarding the plot or story are mostly added by him below the popular restaurant Café Naaz on the slopes of Malabar Hill.
He did not appreciate the idea that the film ended on a sad note. He always believed in a happy ending, even though that meant it was impossible. Undoubtedly he was considered as a master entertainer whose passion was to please the masses who always watch his movies with happy endings. His career graph was more popular between 1960-1988.
The characters depicted in his films were mostly common masses, be it the person on the train platform. Cooliewaiter in Naseeb or Anglo Indian from the streets of Bandra Amar Akbar Anthony. The faith he showed in each of these characters, who later tasted success, is truly a credit to this talented entertainer Manmohan Desai.
He was a middle class man. Be it on the shooting set or else Manmohan Ji was known for his afternoon nap. He always felt fresh and new after his short nap. After the success of his film Amar Akbar Anthony he then bought an aristocratic apartment designed with modern amenities in one of Mumbai’s most expensive locations. But, his heart was always in Khetwadi colony which belonged to the middle class people of Central Mumbai.
Amar Akbar Anthony (Story Line)
While Manmohan Ji gave many hit films during his career but this is one of his films that still appeals to many today. “Amar Akbar Anthony”. I would like to share some interesting anecdotes about this perennial entertainer who has captivated millions of viewers even thirty-five years after his release.
Director Manmohan Desai got the idea of the film “Amar Akbar Anthony” from a news he read in an evening newspaper. An alcoholic man named Jackson was fed up with his life and one day he loaded his three children in a car and decided to drop them in the park. It can be rightly said that the story of director Manmohan Desai begins where news reports end. He twisted the story a bit by forgetting the alcoholic part and making sure that when the father returns he finds all three of his children missing. In the story, the eldest child is adopted by a Hindu police officer and the other two by a Muslim tailor and a Catholic priest.
My name is Anthony Gonsalves
Anthony’s inspiration came to Desai from the real-life character Antav. He wore a hat and spoke to Desai in his own language. “Desai Kaisa Hai Dikhtaich Nahin”. Director Desai was very impressed with his character and decided to portray him on screen.
In the song ‘My name is Anthony Gonsalves’ (You see, the entire country of the system is matched by the hemoglobin in the atmosphere because you are a sophisticated rhetorician who is intoxicated by the sophistication of his accent.) by Anthony as he emerges from the Easter egg is an almost exact quote from a speech in the UK Parliament given by British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in 1878. “not drunk” not “drunk”.
As star Mr. Amitabh Bachchan said: “He (Desai) would first design the ‘things’ he wanted in the film, then shoot them and then write (the script) to tie them together.” He was known to do some of the craziest things but it always worked for him.
If we talk about the famous scene of “donating blood” (where three sons of a mother donate their blood at the same time). “It was a medical disaster. Where in the world do you have three people lying in the same room and transferring from one bottle?” Three different tubes take the men’s blood into a filled bottle and from there only one tube takes the blood to Bharti’s mother. The credits end and then the main story begins.
“It was a medical impossibility. But Desai did it, and it worked. When (the scene) opened, there was incredible applause in the theater.” It was showcased by creative director Manmohan Desai.
The man himself
One thing was clear in most of Manmohan Desai’s films; He always showed his deep respect for the personality of Mother. He said: I always talk about “Ma Sherovali” in my films. I feel that women are the highest creation. The one who conceives and gives birth after nine months is the one in trouble. It brings new life into the world. I rate them very highly. I am a big believer in Durga, Amba and Lakshmi. His credits include the films Naseeb, Suhaag, Parvarish, Coolie, Mard, Desh Premee and Amar Akbar Anthony.
Desai always believed that parents are above God and of course, above themselves. Hurt them and you hurt yourself, was his simple belief that continues today in the world of cinema.
A man who firmly believed “Lost and Found” the formula is missing from this universe and no one will ever find a formula to replace this master entertainer who has the creativity shown by this individual Man Mohan Desai.
