Why Are Indians Good at Math?

Historical History

India has made a significant contribution to the development of Mathematics. Aryabhatta, Brhamagupta and Bhaskara II are some of the famous mathematicians of ancient India. The concept of zero and the decimal system came from India. Important works were done in the field of algebra and trigonometry. There is Vedic mathematics which teaches various calculation techniques through sutras (laws). Growth and development by mathematicians would flow into the general population, making them interested in and skilled in calculations.

Socioeconomic factors

Another factor is the socio-economic situation of India. Historically, engineers and doctors were the only professionals who had the prospect of lucrative jobs. The number of seats in the universities was reduced for these two streams. To get accepted into engineering or medical school, a student has to pass a very tough entrance exam with stress on Math and Science subjects. Only the best of the best can get accepted into a prestigious college or university. This allowed parents, students, teachers and the school system to focus on math and science.

Math Consciousness

Children learn multiplication from childhood. Every evening, you read the multiplication tables. This practice makes children good at mental math. As they grow older, they begin to learn math rules and formulas. Indian methodology is based on learning and practice. Children are made to solve many problems in each of the mathematical concepts, so that it becomes second nature to solve problems. Unlike the US system, the Indian education system does not place much importance on creative thinking and deep understanding of the subject. There are pros and cons to this approach. The Pro is that there is less fear of math – You become mechanized about calculations and solving problems. Good at basic math and makes it easy to learn advanced concepts quickly. The downside is the lack of innovation and creativity. But in a country with a population of over a billion and not enough educational or employment opportunities, getting better at taking the test is essential to the short-term goal of staying competitive.

Computer Industry Boom

As the Computer and software industry boomed, these math and science skills and knowledge of the English language became a huge asset. The US needed tons of software engineers. India had a potential base ready. Young graduates took this opportunity and took classes to learn programming languages, databases and other technologies. Being good at math often leads to being good at programming and analytical thinking. Those who did not go to engineering colleges and graduated in Mathematics or Physics also started diploma and masters in Computer applications. Every year there are hundreds of thousands of Indians who come to the US, get jobs in the IT industry and make the US their home. When they have families and children, they apply the Indian method to their children who go to schools in the United States. Children of Indian origin living in the United States excel in math and science. This trend also applies to children from other Asian countries.

Math in the United States of America

In my opinion, US math textbooks are very well written and illustrated. They explain the concept, history and application of a particular subject. This gives a child a good education by learning the formula. However, the problem is the lack of rigor. Whether it’s a physical body or a mental attitude, strong discipline, regular practice and consistent goals are needed to improve and succeed. Mathematics naturally requires practice. When you solve a math problem, it’s right or wrong—there are no grades like average or fair. In order to solve a problem correctly and quickly, it requires hard work. If teachers do not implement this discipline, students get more wrong answers than correct ones. They fall into a vicious cycle of ‘I’m not good at math-I hate math-Why do we need math’ and so on. The cycle can be reversed if teachers can guide students toward a regular program of math work. They start solving problems, get excited and interested in the subject. It will build confidence in math and the fear will disappear. After all, school math is not Rock Science! If students in India can do well in math, so can students in other countries.
