How To Create The Right Brush Effect In Digital Painting
With the success of smartphones and tablets, digital graphic and illustration activities are becoming more popular. Apart from watching videos or editing photos, photography can be considered as the most creative activity on mobile digital devices.
Digital imaging brings us many powerful tools and features. Many digital painting techniques are not available in traditional painting. We can see many digital artists who create unique artworks, with amazing effects and colors.
Beginning with the creation of personal computers, with the rise of mobile digital devices (smartphones and tablets) digital photography is now increasingly popular among artists, designers and art lovers. Painting applications running on mobile devices are becoming more versatile, and at the same time more powerful.
In addition to basic painting applications for children or absolute beginners, high-quality professional applications can be found on the market. The professional application level should offer users more options and features. But with more options and features, apps are becoming more sophisticated and complex to use.
In this article I will talk about what I consider to be the heart of painting applications: brush effects. I won’t count the thousands of different models of brush heads. Actually I will try to explain how they work and how they are organized. Then how can you benefit from mobile digital painting.
Basically, the brush stroke mechanism is easy to understand:
1/ Take a basic image, like a circle.
2/ Then print it once on the screen: you get a printed circle.
3/ Print the image several times, following a straight line: you have several aligned circles. The spaces between the circles are still large.
4/ Now close the circles until they overlap: finally you get a straight line… made with circles.
Based on the stroke of the brush made with circles, we can add some different aspects to it:
1/ Size: many applications allow to adjust the size of the brush with the cursor (or other suitable tool). You can also find some applications, for the sake of simplicity, set all the brush sizes in advance, then the user cannot adjust them, but can choose between several pre-selected brushes according to their size.
Both solutions have their advantages, it’s the developer’s choice.
2/ Inconsistency (color saturation): this parameter will add or remove transparency to colors. To make a color fade, you just increase the transparency. And at 0% opacity, the color is completely opaque (100% saturation).
3/ Space between 2 brush heads: this parameter can confuse you with the opacity adjustment. In fact, visual ambiguity and distance produce the same effect, but they are completely different. Why does segregation create uncertainty? If you combine several low-resolution images, you will obviously get a darker image. On the other hand, if you increase the opacity (saturation) of a low-density image, it becomes darker.
In practice, depending on the desired effect, you need to find the right balance between opacity and distance. If you want more vivid colors, the distance adjustment can be done first, then add or remove the opacity. Just remember that adding opacity will remove the transparency of the colors.
Just one more note about separation: the more brush heads you add, the more image iterations you’ll get, and the slower your device will be. It is mechanical. Then sometimes you will see some sophisticated brush style drawing left behind your finger.
To summarize this, the best procedure for managing brushes is to properly adjust 3 parameters: first adjust the size of the brush, second select the distance ratio, third select the opacity.
The best way to make the brushes less responsive is to adjust the setting to the smallest size. In fact, the worst brush setting is: maximum opacity and size, minimum distance. Then low speed and high darkness are guaranteed.
But very small brush size is not always the best for moisture, it depends on the shape of the brush. Each user will see their own adjustments. Personally I feel more comfortable with a light but versatile brush, even a large one. I’d rather make a few small hits than one big one.
BRUSH STROKES QUALITY
All paint applications have the same quality of brush strokes. A brush stroke can be defined by 3 characteristics: responsiveness, smoothness and dynamic brush head effects.
1) Responsiveness: is the short delay between the finger movement and the painted stroke on the screen. On the same device, two apps can have two very different brush stroke speeds.
2) Depression: there is a simple test you can do. Open your paint app, pick up a brush or pencil, and quickly draw a circle on your device’s screen. With poor quality paint applications, the strokes will show jagged lines, like a train running inside a curve. These broken lines will disappear when softness is added to the strokes.
3) Brush heads: All brushes have the same optical effects. These effects are created by 2 elements: head shape, and dynamic effects. These 2 elements can be added one by one or all together.
In fact, brush heads are not only made with simple shapes such as round, square, triangle… Their forms are very rich and varied.
The dynamic effect of the brush is the amount of color loaded into the brush and the different movements given to the brush in the same stroke (eg the jitter effect where the brush tip randomly moves above and below the line following the stroke) ).
All these advanced features make the difference between low quality and professional paint applications.
