How I Lost 25kg in 100 Days

A few years ago I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and Fibromyalgia which has been both debilitating and life changing. Aside from the fact that it took over a year to get diagnosed, I felt like I was shaking when I kept up with the number of medications I was taking. In addition to being inactive after years of regular exercise, I was taking medications that contributed to my weight gain.

Over time I put on an extra 25kg, more than a quarter of my body weight, it was depressing and uncomfortable to say the least and I didn’t want to lose any of it anytime soon. After seeing some photos from vacation with friends I decided to change something and lose weight.

I will qualify this article by letting you know that I am not a dietitian or a dietitian and have no expertise in the matter of diet. I’ll just tell you what worked for me, in a very short time. The reason I’m even writing this article is because my doctor was so surprised that she recently told me that I needed people to know my secret. I am here to tell you that there is no secret, just some simple common sense and will power.

I realized that in order to lose weight I had to combine diet changes with at least some exercise. You have to understand that with my condition, exercise is not an easy thing to achieve. The main symptoms of my condition are fatigue and pain, which limits my ability to do any physical activity. These two facts limit the amount and frequency of any exercise I can do, but I haven’t let it stop me from doing what I can.

I started walking about 1 km a day. That was about my limit because I would come home from a walk and lay on the bed for at least an hour in recovery. As time passed, I was able to gradually increase the distance I walked to about 4 km, which took me 45 minutes. I will do my best to get these walks in at least 5 days a week. I had the benefit of an active 25kg American Staffordshire Bull Terrier to pace and pull me, so I’d say the walks were brisk in nature.

Another thing I did to achieve weight loss was to change my diet. I tried to eliminate complex carbohydrates, although I still ate small portions in some meals. I even occasionally indulged in the odd piece of chocolate. You don’t have to completely eliminate the simple pleasures in life.

I usually ate breakfast around 9:00 am before my walks and it was the same every day for the entire diet period. It was really simple and consisted of one cup of natural Swiss muesli formula with one cup of high calcium, low fat milk. If I was looking for food between meals, I wouldn’t starve myself, I would have an apple or something like that to satisfy hunger.

Despite my urges I stuck with the plan and rarely ate again until around 1:30pm. Lunch again consists of the same meal for the whole period. One thing’s for sure, it was a boring diet and you could get sick of eating the same thing but when it works like this, it’s easy to stick to the plan. I had a spinach and rocket salad with half an avocado, a cup of shredded chicken breast, a quarter cup of mild cheddar cheese and a diced tomato with a tablespoon of ranch dressing. All this topped with a soft poached egg that just makes this salad perfect. I promise you, it’s really good and it was easy to prepare, so maintaining the willpower was not difficult at all.

The variety in my diet came with the evening meal, and this is where I got most of my daily carb intake. Three out of seven nights a week I had Thai curry, usually chicken or lamb with vegetables. The good thing about curry is that you can make a big batch and freeze a few portions for the weekend. I always made it with light coconut milk and limited the rice to about half a cup. Other options for evening meals basically came with a lean piece of chipotle fruit or scotch fruit (max 200g) with steamed vegetables (no potatoes). Simple but fun! I also enjoyed a piece of Atlantic or Tasmanian Salmon (200g max) with steamed vegetables or a serving of salad I made for lunch.

Okay so variety wasn’t on the menu but you get the hang of it in no time and it’s easy to program. For the first four weeks I lost about 1 kg a week on average and then suddenly around the fifth week the weight really started to gain. By the end of the 13th I had lost a total of 25kg and was back to my pre-diagnosis weight. Since then, I’ve been able to maintain my weight simply by being smart and avoiding complex carbs like those found in cakes and biscuits. The secret is to keep it simple and it will work.
