Top 10 Online Business Gurus (Some You May Not Have Heard Of)
As a professional, but self-taught, entrepreneur and online entrepreneur, after learning to write in school and not much else, I turned to books and mentors when I finally decided I had had enough of being poor and unsuccessful!
After reading hundreds of books and websites, and subscribing to even more newsletters, there are some people who, over the last 10-12 years, have consistently rated it.
Sometimes it was just one word, phrase, question or comment that made the difference, but what a difference it made. Each step forward was a real step, and we all know that the journey to success is a series of steps, each one building on the last.
I wanted to share with you the Top 10 “Digital Marketing gurus” who have inspired me so far in my online business journey and I tried to tell you about them in chronological order – how I found them ( or in Guy Levine’s case, how they found me!)
1. Robert G. Allen – I became aware of the potential of making money online around 1998 / 1999, about five years after I bought my first domain name. I was aware early on of the marketing potential of any real world business online, but was completely blissfully ignorant of selling information products, making money through affiliate marketing and building an email list to offer referrals. I, like many wool entrepreneurs before me, was so obsessed with building a real world business, that the potential just passed me by! I wish I had met Guy Levine and Chris Barrow soon and corrected a few things that were wrong… in the meantime, my sister’s husband gave her Robert Allen’s “Multiple Streams of Internet Income” for Christmas, which I stole, ate and that led me to read other great books by Robert G Allen like “No Money Down For The 90’s”, now updated for the 2000’s, “One Minute Millionaire” and also Other great internet books like…
2. Joe Vitale – Perhaps best known for his excellent personal development books and in the movie The Secret, Joe Vitale is also a very experienced internet marketer – he’s been around since the mid to late 90’s and earn money online (which is really experienced in the history of the internet). Email marketing is one of the easiest ways to start making money online and, in fact, it’s still the way I make most of my money, either by selling my products or services to my mailing list, or by Recommending carefully selected items from friends and acquaintances. Email marketing (simplified) is driving traffic to a page where someone gives you their name and email in exchange for a gift of some kind, thereby building your mailing list. Then you need to communicate with people so that they can hear from you and you can build a good relationship with your subscribers. Joe explains in two chapters how to do this really well in his book “The E-Code” and if you want to start somewhere easy, I recommend you read it. Then check out Martin Avis of Kickstart Monthly, as he is the master of using a simple text newsletter to make money online!
3. Jaclyn Easton – Her book “Striking It Rich.com” I read at the same time. I was trying to get an internet business off the ground based on matching unsigned artists in the music industry (where my husband and I worked) with managers looking for artists to study. Jaclyn’s book was all about 23 little known websites that make over $1 million a year and many of the business models were basically membership sites. It inspired me so much that I presented my business plan the VERY SECOND the dotcom bubble burst, to a group of Venture Capitalists at the fancy Atlantic Bar & Grill in London, during a fire alarm. Which the fire alarm bell started and stopped randomly, so I had the alternative of calling into the void, or not hearing it at all!
4. Thomas Leonard – the founder of the Coaching movement, and Coach U, which was my online college, and then Coachville. Thomas wrote the first coaching book “The Portable Coach”, which I still highly recommend and he used email, email lists, research and development groups, autoresponders and everything we use today a lot. I’ve been using the Purchase Order he recommended since 1999 to double my hosting on my email list, track my product inventory, automatically follow up with prospects and customers, deliver digital information products, offer both decks, and offer cheap %, split test. headlines and prices via AdTrackers… Thomas was very inspiring and ahead of his time, however, he died very unexpectedly and tragically in 2003, overcoming many of his personal demons.
5. Guy Levine – I went to my first coaching convention, in Las Vegas, to see Thomas live in action, I managed to meet Chris Barrow (my new business coach) and Guy Levine, his friend and internet marketing consultant. Guy blew me away – he was only about 19 – but one of the brightest people I’ve ever met. He knew more about internet marketing than I did and was very generous in sharing his ideas and techniques. Guy starts building a successful SEO / AdWords / PR company based in Manchester, has two babies with wife Martine and buys two helicopters that he flies himself to give speeches. He is also a great speaker! You’d hate him if he wasn’t so happy!
6. Brett McFall – after we met Guy, Steve Watson, Paul & Philly Fuggle and I were invited to go along and support him as he spoke at the first World Internet Summit in the UK at Wembley. There was co-host Alan Forrest Smith, who although not one of my Digital Marketing gurus on this list, has been very influential in my life. I decided, while standing in the audience at that first event, to speak on stage the next year. And I did, thanks to Alan, I actually spoke for them twice, the only British woman to be asked. I became great friends with Brett McFall, one of the co-founders of the now globally known WIS, and he is a very inspiring man. He is a very kind and genuine person who helped me a lot in my speaking and especially in developing my business from the stage. He came to Brighton ahead of one of our Money Gym events that he co-hosted and while we were there filming, we got a really cool video of him jumping in the rain and getting hit by a never-before-seen beachgoer. could not be a little bit on the legs. I smile and remember a great day.
7. Frank Kern – I was also listening to one of Brett’s audio interviews and was particularly taken with a couple of guys who had a simple but dynamite system called the “UnderAchiever Method”. Those guys turned out to be Frank Kern and Ed Dale and they had invented a neat little system where they drove traffic to a page where you asked one question “What do you want to know about……X? where X is the it’s your choice. The answers were collected and compiled so you can see what the most people want to know about, and what are the most popular 1, 2 and 3 words people are using. Then you go and create the product. (usually an e-book, perhaps written by a ghostwriter, containing the most popular questions) and then you reposted it to your new mailing list. Many people used the initial product as an incentive to answer the questions, and this was witnessed, from so all was well. The new traffic was then sold the product along with real testimonials and using brand language. Very clever stuff. I believe they started their small publishing empire of product information pages for a UK publisher from for a very large publisher f irot amount of money, in the end.
It was the first time I really understood the value of a professional, niche market, responsive mailing list of buyers. Both Frank and Ed have been very successful in their various businesses, not without a few setbacks in Franks case! It is heavily associated with many large IM product launches. Frank’s online style is laconic, casual and very, very believable. Now Frank gets a bit of a neck because he might be too persuasive but I just love his style and watching him record live is just hilarious – so rock ‘n’ roll – I really want him one day see live Ed Dale went on to find the highly successful “30 Day Challenge” that leads new internet marketers to a free program (Ed earns his money on the affiliate products he recommends in that free program).
8. Rich Schefren – around 2006 a new internet marketing guru burst onto the scene, except he was a real life business guru who moved into the world of internet marketing, selling his last business. Coached by many big names such as Jim Edwards, Mike Filsaime and many others, he then released his groundbreaking report “The Internet Marketing Manifesto” quickly followed by the “Missing Chapter” and “The Final Chapter” reports. Rich blew my mind because he taught so many solid business techniques that I had NEVER come across, in a way that was easy to understand and understand, while capturing the attention and admiration of the struggling ADD internet marketing community. I went on to participate in both his mentoring programs “Business Development System” and “Leadership Earnings System” – which are fantastic by the way – and as a result my company took off quickly. Do yourself a favor and download the reports – they’re not just about IM but about business – you won’t regret it.
9. Gary Vaynerchuk – well, how about gary? I love him flowers. I first heard him in an audio interview that Rich Schefren did for his mentoring students and Gary was just beginning his journey to World Wine Dominion! Hey, that’s a great catch phrase! You can find Gary at WineLibrary.tv and all over YouTube and Ustream – he is the MASTER of online video. Enthusiastic, fun-loving, straight-talking, unconventional, Gary believes in HARD WORK, that you can simply “Crush it!” in the title of his first book, if you care about what you do, you care about your readers, listeners, subscribers and customers and if you always care about you. According to Gary, small companies have NEVER had a better chance to dominate their competition.
10. Yaro Starak – I don’t remember when I first came across Yaro and his Entrepreneurs Journey blog but I knew right away that he was the real deal. Then I went back and read almost every one of his blog posts from Day One because I was in awe of how he grew from a kid selling Dissertation Publishing Services to students and became one of the most respected bloggers in the world. He has an interesting background and is very open about it, and his various problems – both work and personal – and I love him. It’s not just how to get traffic, it’s how to be a better business. You guys have a lot of great free reports – one is called the Blog Profits Blueprint and it’s also very powerful on Membership Sites, both reports you should really read if you want to learn more about blogging for your business. . He also recommends great people, like Gideon Shalwick, who has the most gentle and charming video presence I’ve come across in a while. I highly recommend both Yaro and Gideon.
There they are – Top 10 Business and Internet Marketing Gurus of the last 12 years or so. For me too. I hope you enjoyed the article and that you check out some of the reports and books and then PUT THEM INTO ACTION!
